Heated Driver's Seat Not Functioning

It's winter and I've realized my seat - the driver - is not heating (1st world problem, right?). I've looked for the SHM (seat heating module), fuse, user manual, and on-line. No luck. I see no listing of the SHM at all in the manual. I doubt it's that as I read on-line that if it was....I'd have no indication on the infotainment screen that the seat heater is 'on' (it does indicate it's 'on' - but it for sure is not).

I see no listing for a seat heater fuse on either the driver or passenger side (either in the engine bay fuse box or the under the driver seat fuse box). There (I assume) must be some sort of thermistor to go between the 4 settings as well? (off, heat level 1,2,3). It's not in the climate settings as I have both driver and passenger seats set to 'none' when the car starts. Under the seat wiring/harnesses are all 'clipped' together, tight, nothing loose, pinched. It's all very clean and orderly.

That leaves the heating element. I'd sure rather not take the leather off and visually inspect - a upholster guy I'm not - but I would knowing me - I just don't have the needed warm, well lit garage, etc. Any other ideas maybe? The passenger side seems fine. There is a fuse listing for 'back seat' - but my car doesn't have rear seat heating.

It's a 2020 R-Design and the car is in the USA. It's due for it's 3rd (and final) 10,000 mile included service in 2500 miles, but I'd rather not wait as my driving miles will put me well on the far side of winter. Anything I'm missing?

Same issue in our 2022 XC40 Recharge Twin EV. I have seen another post on here about somebody having this issue with a petrol version and I believe they had to have part(s) in the seat replaced. Is it under warranty still? If so, it sounds like a dealer visit is in order as they should be able to diagnose it.

Mine works but even at max it is not very warm. I just figured it was a weak heater. Now though, I'm curious.

Do others' seat heaters get really warm, almost hot?

The Xc60 I had as a loaner had mega hot warmers compared to my P8.
The passenger seat in ours gets pretty hot...nothing from driver’s side though.

Drivers side seat gets warm but not hot the way the steering wheel does. I like the toasty steering wheel but I do not want a sweaty butt! So I like my seat warmer like it is. The question is though is it meant to get toasty … for those whole like a sweaty butt!!!!

I had my 2020 R-Design checked out and was told the module was bad. A new one was ordered and it could be sent as early as tomorrow (2/3/2022). I asked if it's a simple 'plug and play' (like a fuse) and it's not (of course!). Once installed it has to be programmed. There are separate right and left seat modules and I was thinking about switching the passenger side module to the drivers side (as I'm usually the only person in the car). Well no......I'll just wait. The service desk person wasn't sure even as to which module it (or they) were as it's all from a plug in computer diagnosis - in other words, they weren't at the actual fuse/module box under the seat. I couldn't ask the tech as he was at lunch. So....no big deal.

I read above that some folks find the seat heat not feeling 'hot' - it gets real toasty and real quick.- just like the steering wheel. So, you may have an issue??

I had earlier read that if it was a bad module, that the indicators lights on the info screen would not come on. This was false - as all indicators lights came on.

I had also tried to find a fuse/relay/module to check myself, but in a rather lengthy search in the manual and online, I could find nothing. Lots of info on what fuse is what....but not a thing about modules. I did find a wiring diagram or two, but they were so small/detailed, I could not expand them enough to make head/tails out of them (not Volvo's fault by any means). I don't know why it's such a secret/mystery - probably to keep people like me from screwing up. Isn't it bizarre how (virtually any car maker) will have an entire 20 page chapter on how to set your stereo, or put on your seat belt, but a 1/4 of a page dedicated to the 'fuse box'. I have never understood that......

See thread for my latest update on same issue.

When I first got my '20 XC40 T5 R-design (Aug 22), the driver's seat heater worked wonderfully well. By the winter of '21-'22 it had stopped heating. The passenger seat heater still works fine. I, too, thought that it must be a fuse or loose wire and I would do the necessary research and fix it myself. Like all the other entries here that I have read, I found no information on any fuses or modules or anything. I guess that leaves me with the option of taking it to the dealer.

The dealers diagnostic report said they checked the control module and verified there was power to the seat heating element and therefore the heating element must be faulty. No mention of the temperature sensor. Faulty temperature sensor sounds like a good possibility so I'll pursue that. - Thanks

Late to this thread, but had some questions for everyone. I have a 2020 R-Design XC40 in which the driver’s side heated seat stopped working in 2023 just as described in the original post above from 3 years ago.
Interestingly, I had a BMW i3 for 9 years in which the driver’s side heated seat module had to be replaced twice.
This made me think, that maybe it is me, or more accurately, my butt…or lack of one. I am tall and thin and have no caboose. My seat compression by my ischial tuberosities (google it) may well be knife like compared to the more fluffy average American butt. Could I be some how damaging the copper coils of the heating elements and shorting out modules by concentrated focal compression? So I ask others in the thread that have had simply the driver’s side heating stop working, do you all have skinny butts too?
