Interesting, I had the same hairline crack issue last year with my 2019 XC40. Insurance covered the repair since I wasn't aware of what caused it. As of last week, the tilt function won't close, once opened. Going to have the dealer look into the new issue.

Same issue for our car. Parked up fine and went to use car a week layer and front sunroof cracked all the wat across. Dealer trying to blame a stone chip but car was not even being driven. Only said he would talk to Volvo when i told him to otherwise he just eanted me to pay. Told him there were 40+ other people on forum with same issue so he tried to then diss forums and said 40+ was not a lot as 20000 cars on the road. I said not all 20000 have panoramic roofs and that 40+ was in less than a year. Lets see what volvo say but im not hopefull

Well friends, add my 2021 xc40 P8 Recharge to the list. Vehicle is garaged with 5k miles (no impact) and the front panel has 2 huge cracks. Will take to the dealer in CA and report back!
OK I'm back, forgot to provide an update. Dealer said the cracks were from rocks kicked up from the road. Even when he showed me, I didn't see any impacts. I thought this problem might be from the extra power-torque from my xc40 P8. My thought was too much strain on the body since Volvo basically dropped a bunch of batteries in the gas model and added extra reinforcing where the engine used to be. However, it appears this problem is also occurring in the gas only models too.
I love the p8 and my last car was a 2019 S90. Wish Volvo would own up to this defect and make things right via a recal or as dealers now call it, a campaign. Guess it sounds better, ha ha.

Resurrecting this post to note that the glass in our panoramic sunroof has cracked for a second time (that is, the replacement glass cracked). Just wondering if this is an issue others continue to have, either a first occurence or multiple. Thanks.

Do love our recharge.

We own a 2022 Volvo XC 40. We noticed a crack in the sun roof glass after the air was on, and the outside temperature was in the mid 90's.We took it to the dealership, and guess what, we were told exactly the same thing, that a stone must have hit it.Stones must have an affinity for XC 40 panoramic glass sun roofs, as per posts within this forum.A glass repair shop, stated that a stone did not cause the glass breakage. Our glass breakage is similar to those show on this forum. In NYS, glass breakage is usually covered, but this is considered a collision, since the entire unit needs to be replaced. We have hired an attorney, and a letter has been sent to the Volvo regional office. We are preparing a class action suit against Volvo USA. We have also sent letters to the NHTSA. Interesting, Volvo than came back as a " good will " gesture, and were willing to cover our deductible, but as a collision would have increased our insurance rate. As per this forum, we all have experienced the same problem, with the same lame excuse from dealerships representing Volvo USA. I'm asking you to email me at msharak1@twcny.rr.com to join our class action suit, this clearly is a manufacturing defect, that I believe Volvo USA is aware, and simply giving us all lip service, since replacement is in excess of $3,500.

We have a 2023 XC 40 purchased at the end of 2022. Our crack happened soon after handwashing the car and letting it sit outside our garage in below freezing temps. We see purchasing dealer tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM in Allentown PA to have it evaluated. It's under warranty, but we've already been advised that if the technician declares it to be impact damage, then we'll have to pay for the replacement or make an insurance comprehensive claim and pay the deductible. Only slightly more than 2000 miles.

I have an XC40 Recharge EV which I got last June, and noticed this week that the sunroof was cracked from side to side. We live in San Diego (so I wouldn’t think it is a weather related issue) and use this car primarily for driving in town (not a lot of long distance road trips or off roading). The cracks look like stress fractures to me as there is no “spiderwebbing” effects or any clear points of impact. Interestingly, when I took the car into the Volvo dealership today, they said that they thought it was due to rock damage and said in their opinion there were 3 different points that they thought were rock impact points. I explained to them that although the areas they were highlighting were slightly more noticeable to the touch than the rest of the cracking, it was highly unlikely that this car was hit by 3 separate rocks in the same area of a single panel of glass on the top of the car with no other nicks or dings visible on any other part of the vehicle or any other glass surface. We absolutely never heard any rock strikes, and have no idea when such an event could have occurred since the car spends a great deal of time in a covered garage. While my experience with Volvo has been good in the past, this event is very concerning as they will not even attempt to acknowledge that something that is so statistically improbable is worth investigating further. At this time, I have told them I am not assuming responsibility for this as I view it as a Volvo issue, and would wait patiently for them to make things right (while hoping the situation doesn’t worsen and create any further safety concerns). Any suggestions on next steps??

Which Volvo dealer in San Diego? I live in San Diego and just noticed a crack like this in my sunroof. Hoping to avoid the same story from the same dealer.

My 2023 XC40 (2 months old) has the same crack across the width of the sunroof, near the front of the car.
When I called to make the appointment they told me it should be covered under warranty, but today when it was in for service they said it will not be covered as it must have happened from an impact. (Though the crack is sandwiched in between the exterior and interior glass layers so you cannot touch it on either side. Seems to be a fracture. Also no spider web cracking - just a long line across. And I had them send me the pictures they took to prove the impact, but pictures only show the crack. No nick that points to impact.)

The service department has taken it up the flagpole to Volvo corporate. They have to order a part for the replacement so we’ll see how this pans out when that comes in.

I live in FL so it gets hot. But I rarely drive (we didn’t even have a second car for the 5 months prior to buying this car) - and have only been on the highway 2x in the vehicle. I don’t know when a rock would have hit my car- we’re in a flat area a few blocks from the ocean and I drive to and from the grocery store mainly on suburban streets. Someone on this thread said they were told a seagull must have dropped something on theirs to cause their sunroof crack - so I’m waiting to hear that excuse/explanation from Volvo. I guess that’s possible… and also it seems like a HUGE coincidence that this is a recurring problem with XC40s — all having no apparent point of impact & all cracking in the same way/place….

Hi, I'm the UK owner of an XC40 T5 Recharge PHEV, which is now ten months old and with just over 6,000 miles on the clock. Yesterday we got back in the car after a visit to the local leisure centre and my wife pointed out a crack right across the front sunroof (she sits in the back when we go swimming to keep our 2 year old grandson company). The crack wasn't there on the outward journey and the car was parked in the large car park, well away from any buildings, trees or other overhangs, on a warm but not hot day. Took it straight to my dealer and they have said it must be due to impact damage and have quoted me £818 to replace. But if I run my finger over the point where they say there has been impact you can't feel anything, so I think it's a stress fracture within the glass and should be replaced under warranty and I have told them this. Issue currently unresolved but thanks for all previous posts - they can only help my case

Has anyone had this problem?
The glass in the panoramic sunroof has a crack across the corner maybe 15 cms long. The car is less than a year old
There is no sign of impact on either side of the glass
Local dealer spoke to Volvo initially who said it will have been caused by an impact. My dealer said they cannot see any evidence of impact and have sent in a report. I am waiting to hear back!!
just bought July

I was quoted £1400 GBp after owning a X
C40 rdesign B4 with 6500 on the clock and two weeks after ownership I have a massive crack. Dealer said it was an impact, but I'm more convinced it's a stress fracture, and my insurance acknowledged the claim, but 5 days on, still cannot book the vehicle in. So I ordered some stonechip repair from Amazon, and whilst it definitely hasn't fixed the issue, it had at least stopped it Getting worse, took about an hour and the resin has set, so at least I know it won't shatter on me. Disappointed in Volvo, after all the "Safety claims" to have a screen crack before the first payment, and the weasel who sold me the car couldn't have given less of a sh!t TBO. I love the car, hate Volvo, I expected more from a GBP £40+ k car. Servicing will be at Kwikfit to keep costs down, and as for the "family vibe" they try to push, well, no thanks.
