rear passenger doors

This is probably an odd question, but does anyone know of a way to modify the rear passenger doors to open wider, like a full 90 degrees?

My parents are in their 70s and it's getting hard for them to get in and out and thinking it would be easier if the doors opened wider.

I'm going to say no, I don't think you can do that. The check strap (the thing that gives the detents and prevents the door from opening too far) would have to be changed, and even then if you could get a longer check strap, the front edge of the door may hit part of the body and damage the paint. FWIW I worked as a body and closures engineer for a major automotive company for 25 years, so I'm speaking with a bit of experience on this. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'd say Volvo would not have limited the opening angle unless they had a very good reason for it.

I think you’d find that because the door is quite wide (due to the short wheelbase), they limited the angle for parking lot dings. I’m an old geyser too and not so limber, so I appreciate your thoughts for them. I don’t find it that bad getting in the back. I had to adapt to sitting in the driver’s seat (bashing my head) after climbing into my old Disco for years at first. I tried the XC60 and 90 in the showroom the other day, and they’re definitely easier, but I like the dimensions of my car, particularly parking it.
