Phantom Braking with Adaptive Cruise Control

Has anybody else experienced phantom braking when using OPD and adaptive cruise control? I just came back from a 250km return trip, most of it on the highway and I had more than half a dozen phantom braking episodes - a couple of them were quite full on.

Cruising along with cars all around me I suddenly went into deep regen mode. I had to smash the accelerator to get the car to speed back up again.

Another instance I had a truck come across into my lane, but it was like 100m infront of me. My car suddenly applied the brakes like it had just cut across immediately infront of me and had invaded the distance I set between myself and the vehicle infront. For the record I run the shortest distance possible between myself and the vehicle infront (which I believe is very adequate).

And also another time I was driving along doing 110kph in my own lane, nothing around me and the car suddenly went into regen.

I'm on v2.9. Back when I had my MY22 XC40 (which was on v2.2, 2.3 etc), I don't remember any phantom braking issues. Obviously something is triggering it or the car thinks it sees something. All I could think today was this is what Tesla drivers must feel like. I also had a bit of a close call as I had one car that was a bit too close behind me, and my car phantom braked. Guy must have thought I was brake testing him. Needless to say he backed off a lot. It wasn't my intention though and the situation could have easily been worse.

Anybody else had a similar experience?

I’ve had very similar experiences recently (I’m still on v2.7). I’ve stopped using adaptive cruise control when other cars are around because it’s just easier. The braking can be quite intense for seemingly no reason.

I don’t remember having these issues when I got the car, I think it came with v2.5.

I only have occasional very light "hiccup", usually when on the freeway west of Melbourne where there's a few bends and a very steep hill that the semis go up really slowly. I'm tooling along with cruise set at 110 kph up the hill around a slight RH bend and the car sees the semi moving slowly in line of sight in the left lane (I'm in overtaking lane)...it usually just feels like it lets off the accelerator then goes "oops, nothing to see here, carry on". I've never had full-on phantom braking/re-gen since we got the car in Sep 2021 and I almost always have the adaptive cruise engaged. I usually use the farthest or second-farthest distance setting though...I think that gives the car more time to react and it doesn't panic. If you have it on the shortest distance it's going to get a lot closer then freak out (potentially). Just a theory though. Maybe try a farther distance level and see what happens. Still on V2.7 here...maybe we'll get 2.9 download tomorrow when we go for a drive?

I second this theory. If it's still too sensitive at the larger following distances then there might be something funny going on with the sensor. Even if it resolves that solution is still a bandaid for the problem, but at least it wouldn't be bothersome anymore.

I use it on every trip, 99% of time, with the maximum distance allowed (anticipation capacity is good both for humans and robots)
Only 1000 km run since beginning of may, no phantom braking

Only instance where I'm used to deactivate is before reaching a split lanes light in city where a car in front changes line: then the XC40 will reaccelerate while there's another car stopped a couple of meters farther, so it will powerfully brake later on.
Then there's a big sound coming from passenger seat I prefer to mute by anticipation

No big issues here, 2023 with about 8,000mi and I use. Honestly only time I had an issue was day 1 on the way home - I think the autopilot got tricked by some harsh tree shadows on the side of the road and kinda swerved left a bit.

Braking wise, it's more just what I'd chalk up as implementation struggles like mentioned above: sometimes slowing too much when a vehicle in front is exiting the roadway, or I've found in stop / go low speeds sometimes it brakes too harshly after covering small distances when following the vehicle in front (but other times it's perfect, so I don't know why it struggles at times). I typically run at one or two ticks down from max distance.

No phantom breaking, and I use it every day. Even started using pilot assist a bit now that we can finally toggle it on/off via the wheel button.
I'm using "three lines" as distance though, and more during winter. Maybe try increasing the distance and see if it affects it? One "line" seems to be one second, kind of close at highway speed 😬

I just had a couple of these situations here is AUS last weekend on a long trip. Highway driving, a few cars around but nothing to be concerned about and a slight incline ahead. Something triggered the car to brake even though there wasn't anything around, but I put it down to the decline/incline in the road ahead. Was annoying more than anything as it's unexpected and at that point I was on 2.8.

Note - this happened a few times in my previous car as well (Mercedes). Generally it's the road conditions and it's always seemed to be decline/incline situations with other cars around I've found, I suspect it's bad radar signal bounce that causes it

The exact same thing has happened to me a few times on the freeway since I got the car in November 2022. I’ve always used OPD and adaptive cruise control. The car would sometimes suddenly brake when the car in front of me was still far away. My setting is usually set to “2 lines” for the adaptive cruise control. It’s hard to tell what triggered it and I cannot reproduce it so I never mentioned it to Volvo

Thanks all. Next time I head down that same road I'll play with the minimum distance settings with the ACC and see if it makes any difference to the sensitivity. It could be following closely to the car infront leaves "less room for error" and even with a false positive issue it causes the car to brake more suddenly than expected. So I'll try to increase the distance with the hope that even if the car phantom brakes, it won't be as abrupt.

bit late to the party but i just got my 2024 and did my first long journey and it did it twice in autopilot. On the way home no problems, i had changed the ACC distance so maybe that was the thing, it does regen hard if someone pulls into you set space, that's why i reduced it to stop peeps taking my safe distance.

Yep, mine does it without cruise being on.. It will just lock-em-up for no reason... Volvo has issues with their programing for sure, and they don't seem to be in a hurry to resolve any of them.. I still have mine lock up in reverse after deactivating the nannies.. To say I don't fully trust this car is an understatement.. I have a dash cam, so when i wreck one day due to the car acting up, i'll have what i need for the attorneys..

The only time I've experienced this was when a vehicle in the lane in front of me turns out of our lane to enter a turn lane. Of course, they are going to decelerate to make the left/right turn. But the radar in my Volvo still picks up their presence as being "nearly in front of me". So, it decelerates at whatever pace necessary to avoid what it sees as an impending collision.
That said... I have found that, if I nudge the Volvo to the opposite side of my lane, the car seems to take it as an "all clear" and returns to the set speed. Doing this, I now only rarely need follow up with the accelerator pedal on rare occasions.
