I found a loose single page oil specification supplement in my wife's recently purchased 2020 XC40 that shows a change from SAE 0W-30 or 5W-30 to SAE 0W-20 only. As I will DYI does anyone know why they now require the previously extreme service SAE 0W-20?

AFAIK, Volvo never spoke about their reasons behind the change. If I had to guess, they changed the oil grade to 0W-20 because with 5W-30 the cylinder walls in some cars were getting damaged.
Volvo says that you can use 5W-30 grade oil but on the next oil change you'll need to use 0W-20. Also make sure that you're using the correct oil specification. For 5W-30 it's ACEA A5/B5 and for 0W-20 it's VCC RBS0-2AE.
