C40 Rear Visibility

After having an XC40 Recharge, I’m now driving a C40. Visibility from the rear window leaves much to be desired. Granted it’s just as bad as both Tesla’s I’ve had (3 and Y) so I’m used to compensating for it. I’m surprised Volvo didn’t implement a rear view camera mirror for the C40 since the rear visibility is so compromised.

Anyone else have any ideas or recommendations besides ducking my head down slightly to see something out the back window?

There is a very detailed thread on here for C40 rear visibility. It doesn’t really bother me one bit, and I have been driving my C40 for 18 months now. Prior to this I drove a 2004 XC90 2.5T for 18 years so I am used to a wide expansive rear window. It’s a matter of how your driving style is as well.

There are likely after market devices, that plug into your rear view mirror to get a bit of an expanded view. I can also see why it is a hindrance to many who aren’t used to it. The Polestar 4 doesn’t even come with a rear window, but they have built a camera on the rear roof and you can see the complete rear picture from your inside rear mirror. It’s absolutely slick.

Volvo C40 could look into something like how Polestar 4 design teams did it, but this would be a significant software and hardware upgrade.

It took me a year to figure out that the best (albeit still not very good) view is had by tilting the mirror up until the image of the rear window is at the very bottom of the mirror. I've considered getting some kind of aftermarket add-on mirror to mount even lower and extend the view even farther back. And, whenever possible lower the rear headrests.

I'm trying to lift the car with the side effect benefit of better rear view visibility. Starting with tallest tire diameter I can fit without rubbing. Next, add some top of strut spacers. Hoping for around a 1.75" to 2" total lift. I've also set the seat a bit lower than I would normally set it at to get farther rear view visibility.

I feel like I’ve ridden the seat all the way up and down looking to see if I can get a better angle/view out of the mirror/rear window. I can just barely get maybe 20 feet of visibility behind the vehicle. If I need to see more, I just duck my head down slightly. Thankfully the side mirrors are useful in their size.

@BigVikC40Dadda I’ve seen what they did for the Polestar 4, I wish the designers thought about it for the C40. Although as a brand, Polestar doesn’t make financial sense. For example, the PS3 and EX90 are virtually identical, except the EX90 is a more practical vehicle with a lower price point. The PS2 isn’t packaged well for the money and is identical to the XC40/C40 twins which for less money give you all the same features. Which brings me to PS4… it’s beautiful and I love it… but why does it exist? It’s a high riding sedan…

Please excuse my rant lol

Polestar CEO Ingenlath and company are calling the Polestar 4 an “SUV Coupe”! 😀. I absolutely love the bold futuristic design (interior and exterior). I’ll likely want to get behind a P4 at some point. It also gives me a solid business case to drop my Polestar 3 reservation, way too pricey and far less “oomph” compared to the P4 - product cannibalism at its best here likely! 🙂

I really want to understand the thought process over at Geely… like they make beautiful cars… but they are all the same… just different price points and but all the same options. As a consumer, I can’t justify any of the Polestar’s over an equivalent Volvo. Now if only we can get ZEEKR or Smart over here.
Granted we will probably wait for the EX30 and just get that when our ID.4 lease is up.

Life’s in the forward direction @Jesse347 😀; if you get used to not looking backward, you’ll just appreciate the beauty of forward momentum 🙂, with side mirrors, rear camera, rear mirror and looking over your shoulders. You’ll get used to it. The only caveat would be if you had a tall passenger in the back that could likely block the view. My 6’3” son sits in the back and it still doesn’t bother me at all.

I find visibility on the C40 to the rear 3/4 pretty decent, just the direct rear is poor but the reverse camera mitigates this. I frequently drive a small van with no rear view and no reverse camera, and no parking sensors. So I have learned to rely almost 100% on getting a reading of my surroundings before reversing.
  1. Where am I reversing too
  2. Are there hidden bollards or other obstacles such as protruding pipes or signs.
  3. When I park there will I get the boot/doors open unhindered
  4. Any pedestrians likely to do stupid things
  5. Other road users likely to present a hazard

Not trying to preach, just giving a basic checklist that you would be surprised how many drivers just don’t do, even when they have good visibility.

Good suggestions for parking. Here's one more: Back first. That is, when parking, if you must, back into the slot so the vehicle is headed out. Statistically, many minor collisions take place in parking lots due to backing errors. I try to "pull through" when parking so I don't need to back up at all. Also, with my still-new Volvo, I tend to park where no one else is likely to or that provide my C40 some protection from the stupidity of other drivers.

@ICDP_EV appreciate the feedback, I was more curious how others were mitigating it as I have been since bringing my C40 home.

@bogiesan I always back in to park. I have noticed the rear automatic emergency braking is VERY touchy. I’ve resorted to parking nose in when I pull into my garage to avoid being thrown around lol. My XC40 recharge was never this sensitive but I can see they’ve added more parking sensors to the C40.

I hated the rear visibility at first and griped about it on here until one day I realized I had adjusted to it somehow. The side mirrors are really large and give a good view to the rear so I think I’ve began to lean more on them.
Be careful they don’t break;)

Absolutely agree about getting over that initial shock if you’re used to having decent or good rear visibility. Our other car is an I-Pace and I drive a work van with zero rear visibility. So my first thought in the C40 rear visibility were, what’s all the fuss about. :)

I was so stressed about this when I bought the car and then it turned out to not be a big deal. I use my side mirrors a lot more and that’s good enough. When looking out the back I can’t see drivers, just the lowe half of peoples’ cars but that’s good enough for me to know someone is there.

the only thing that is kind of shocking is how bad the rear camera is, it’s field of vision is the worst I’ve ever had - it’s like cars from when the feature was first introduced. I have no clue why they positioned it the way they did, it could have been so much better. Oh well, I still am really happy with the car otherwise 😊
