Hi, I have a significant problem.
XC40 Recharge continues to get Connection Error when using the charge cable the car comes with ( 240v), 4 charge point stations EVGo… i am very familiar with EV’s but cannot find a solution to what I would classify as an extremely big problem.

the car goes through a initialization phase and then goes directly to Connection Error… any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry you are having such a horrible time. I suggest
1. Get your car to the dealer ASAP before you run out of power
2. While waiting for 1 go to a public charge station and call them so they can help diagnose what is happening in the handshake.

Honestly I doubt a public chargers support will be able able to help as it sounds like your car has a broken bit.

Did they charge it when they have it to you?

good luck. Let us all know what happens.

Thanks… going to dealer tomrrow am.. will post the findings… charger was working fine… then suddenly would not connect to a public Charge Point today… then after that no chargers would connect… tries to initialize (handshake) and then goes into connection erfor.

First thing I would do when arriving at dealer wold be to hook up to their outside charger.

I had what might have been a similar problem both on the Volvo-supplied charger and with EVGo. My solution was to hold the plug tightly and up against the car. The weight of the charge cable was pulling it down and the plug was likely not making good contact with the car. By lifting and pressing it in, it made the data connection and was able to start. Once the initialization completed and the charging started, I could let go of the cable.

Until then, I had only ever charged with the Volvo cable, and I had that issue. So I attempted my first public charging (EVGo) and had the same problem, and it was there that I found the workaround, but only after 20 minutes of cursing. Tried the lift and push method on the Volvo cable and it worked. Installed a ChargePoint Flex which never had that problem and never went back to the Volvo cable. I have only used one other public charger - it took something like 5 attempts to get the GreenLots charger to initialize, but I think that was a network problem, as it also would not recognize the app was talking to it.

Give it a try.

Sound me a good temporary solution. Have you taken your car in to get it fixed? Though you have a solution that is not how the system is meant to work and I would worry that it might get worse.

An obvious point but when you plug in do you make sure you hear the loud “ping”. It is easily possible to plug in and not get the ping. It even works without the ping (sometimes?) but I always re apply if I fail to get it until i do. Have always managed to. Most times I get the ping first try. It should be noted that the easiest way to get the ping after a fail is to fill detach the “hose” and re try. Also consider the angle of entry. A small deviation in angle makes the slide in vastly harder.
Cheers and good luck

Thx for the good suggestion… tried it without luck… the Volvo cable starts solid white and then blinks on and off white…tried to initialize connection ( the cart dash also show’s its trying to connect) then 30 seconds later RED light near car port and connection error on dash… have a dealer apt in the am… will post the fix once they figure it our…

Update: Local dealer does not have a solution for inability to charge..they are getting the same error code… they are working with Volvo HQ for next level technical support… what’s odd is the back up camera also stoped working and the OnCall system lost record of VIN and details…this is very strange… so I’m in a loaner, for what I’m expecting to be for a while:(… will post solutions once they’re identitled.

Wish they would do P8 loaners :(
Is it not amazing how bad ice cars feel now?
Before doing research and thinking about it I had not expected the delightful performance of evs.
Good luck on getting yours back soon.

I am gitry since getting my car back last week. Truly amazing how crude ICE feels. And I am the perfect lab rat since wife has identical car to my P8 in a T5. I hate driving her car as the engine just is so rough and lacks the smoothness and linear acceleration. It is a night car, but prefer my P8. So much so I am debating ordering a C40 give her my P8 amd take the hit reading her car in when the C40 is out.

I hate the thought of even less space in the back with the c40s sloping butt. But I have a dog so she needs a more traditional suv trunk.
Have you got to play on mountain roads on the P8 yet. Opd is insanely good and the acceleration in between bends is fun.

ice definitely basic compared to ev :)

Grats on getting it back. Enjoy :)

Hi, re the trailer hitch is that like the OEM you tuck it in when not in use? Thanks:)
No - this is just a standard 2" square hitch receiver. I got this just to be able to mount my bike racks. No moving parts, no electrical hookups - just an empty square receiver.

That's what I want -- also for a bike rack only. What is the cost & availability?

Update: my car (150 miles on odometer) still at the dealership waiting for a fix…a week+ and growing.. (unable to complete handshake to charge). After running though several diagnostics, they are unable to fix the charge issue via software… now the dealership is working with another system specialist from Volvo… parts are on order to see If physical replacement of the onboard module will solve problem (but parts are back ordered)…will post the final fix /solution once complete.…on a positive note, the dealership‘s attention to customer care during times like this has been terrific…now, it’s up to Volvo to identify and fix the problem

Or give you a new car… then fix the one in the shop and use it as a demo / loaner.

LowCo2,

Sorry to hear about your charging problems. I just bought a 2022 recharge yesterday and already had a connection problem at a public chargepoint box. I think in my case the problem is with that box because charging at home is working fine. I'm very curious to see how your situation is going with the dealer, how long are the parts on back order?
