Hi All,

I have an XC40 recharge purchased in Jan 2025 that I was loving-it’s my first EV. Until a few weeks ago I took a trip out of town and was charging via the cable on plus for RV (that I’ve used many times before without issues). The car suddenly stopped charging and was stuck in yellow/initializing. There weren’t many chargers around so I went to a hotel and tried theirs—that’s where I started getting a red error message. Then I went to 3 other chargers including a DC and Tesla (using adaptor) and all gave error messages. A few times it would briefly look like it was going to charge, then quickly would say error. Bc I was far from home with low battery, I got to ride in a tow truck back home about 100miles. Oh, I should mention my car had 3000 miles and was less than 3 months old. Also, I spent at least an hour with volvo on the phone trying various resets (holding console button, holding defrost button, etc). Also I don’t use a charging schedule.

I took it to the service center Mar 31st. They’ve called me multiple times now saying they think they’ve solved the problem (which it’s never been clear to me what that is) but then the next day they’ll call to say it is no longer accepting a charge. That’s happened 3 times and it’s been over two weeks without my car. Fortunately I have a loaner, but it’s not the same (literally and figuratively). I don’t know what to do or what this issue could be or what recourse (if any) I have. Honestly no matter what happens I’m worried I’m always going to be anxious this could happen again AND I often travel alone to a fairly rural area to visit family so it makes me especially nervous. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Clearly something in the car is faulty and let's hope it is a very rare example of this problem. Sorry for your troubles. The vast majority of XC40 Recharge drivers don't have any issues charging either on AC or DC. Given that the dealer seems incompetent, maybe it is time to find another dealer to fix the car.

If the errors were only on AC charging, it would clearly be the OBC (on-board charger) but as it also happened with DC charging, it could be something else (BMS - battery management system?).
The dealer should be able to read error codes through VIDA and quickly diagnose the issue but as it is taking that long, maybe there are no errors registered, making it more difficult to solve.
Open a ticket with Volvo Corp, they might be able to push the dealer.

On board charger was replaced recently on our 2024 XC40. Similarly the dealership had trouble diagnosing the problem. Not being able to charge on level 2 chargers along with the same error messages makes me feel it is an OBC. (We were able to charge with level 3 chargers. )

Yes today (when I got my 100 day satisfaction survey-ha) it occurred to me to contact volvo. The were very understanding and said they would look into it. I’m hoping that adds some pressure to get the mechanic moving. I’m reluctant to take the car anywhere else bc it’s under warranty and all covered.

Actually, it just occurred to me—is calling Volvo (not local dealership but company) the same as opening a ticket with them? They said they’d open a case. I’m just searching for any route to get this resolved/get answers. Thanks!

I've single engine type, charge it at home and on holiday to Austria through Germany I used Ionity as charge stations and no problems so far. It's my own for more than 2 years.
hope a reset or electric chip replacement will fixed it for good. The car is fine to my opinion. Happy Easter 🐣
