Just bought a Recharge after owning three Teslas -- X, 3 and Y. Lots to discuss, but am loving the Volvo so far. However, I have found a few thing things I wish were improved, most of which have been discussed here that should be handled with future software updates.

LIKES VS TESLA

- Much better ride - Model Y needs a softer suspension or addition of adjustable air suspension.

- I prefer the smaller size of the XC40

- Main info on screen behind steering wheel.

- The steering wheel also, actually

- Normal, usable door handles.

- Easier HVAC controls

- Prefer having a real key vs phone and/or key cards

DISLIKES/NITPICKS

- No scheduled charging - I just ordered a longer cable that has a scheduler built into it - we have super cheap rates from 11 pm to 5 am.

- Reverse camera screen cut in half and does not utilize the 360 screen as a default on the upper half of split screen.

- Phone screen not fully visible when phone is on charging pad.

- % of battery displayed instead of miles. I get the reason, but hard to compare apples to apples with Tesla, which was horrendously optimistic. We also have a Chevy Bolt and it is accurate for mileage use while Teslas are not close. Rough estimate in Tesla is that 100 miles of charge will give you 60-65 miles of driving.

- No XM - I guess it is coming. I use my phone app (there was no XM in Model Y).

- Transmission tunnel in rear floor - I know, but it does really kill center legroom...

- Acceleration - hypercar 0-60 was fun every once in a while (XC40 is plenty quick though)

I am a big mod guy, but not much to do with this car -- I have custom wheels ordered. I might look into adding the Exterior Styling pieces, but in black instead of brushed chrome.

Where did you find to order wheels from?

I find it surprising that the cameras don’t default to 360 view. When we test drove I’m pretty sure it did, and in the loaner vehicle I have while I wait for my XC40 it does default to 360 view. I feel like there’s a hidden setting or something.

Things like scheduled charging and XM are just missing from the software. The hard to see phone issue is likely because Volvo expects people to put their phone on the centre screen through carplay/android auto. Unfortunate that we have to wait for all these things, but at least they are on the roadmap for software updates.

Glad to hear that you prefer the Volvo over your Tesla’s after owning the car for about a month I’m loving it but feel a tinge of buyers remorse because of expense relative to range. However build quality is top notch.

Glad to see you upgrade from the Silicon Valley Civic ;-)

Great tech, terrible build quality.

Promise I will add photos, but I did get the exterior styling kit added and then had the brushed silver pieces wrapped in gloss black to match the wheels -- very subtle but finishes off the lower body in a tastefully aggressive way.

SwwEEeeet !
  • New Rims: What's the min. weight threshold of each rim given overall the Car is heavy
  • With now the 21" new rims, did you get same tire size for ALL four wheels ? Or did you stagger them like the originals ?
  • Would love to see pics after the styling kit !
