What Do You Wish Your XC40 Had?

Like the title says, what options do you wish your XC40 had that are not available? For me...

  • Ability to keep the current Drive Mode after it's turned off instead of always reverting back to "comfort" mode. Even though most cars also do not have this ability (MPG calculation reasons?), it would still be nice to have the option.
  • I like the sleek center tablet screen but wish the heating/cooling functions had their own separate knob/button control. It's rather distracting to have to take your eyes off the road to navigate to that screen to make changes.
  • Seat cooling! My wife and I loved these in our previous vehicle.
  • A Polestar version! Maybe someday...

Temperature you can easy change by voice command.. I'm cold +1 degrees I'm warm -1 degree or use say set temperature to.....

Indeed seat cooling and massage seat would have been great..

My big wish is that you could control the heating/cooling and configuration in the Volvo Car APP. See the temperature inside and then start the car and turn on the heated seats, steering wheel, defrost, heater etc.

I know now when you remote start the car; the last settings are remembered and happen, but I would like to be able to see current inside temperature and adjust them.
Wireless Apple CarPlay since it already supports wireless charging

I can set the temp in mine with voice control. Temperature 72 (or whatever).
- Fully automatic climate control (auto fan speed!)
- Wireless Apple CarPlay
- Substantially longer front seat bottom cushions
- Seat cooling
- Ability to close sunroof after engine shut off
- Speakers in front doors, especially for bass
- Voice control that actually worked
- Better brakes
- Transmission tuned to avoid overly harsh downshifts when only moderate throttle increase is applied
- Pilot Assist that operates for longer than a few seconds at a time
- AC power plug

Jezza,

It seems like most folks feel the same way you do. Maybe Volvo will take this into account when they start on the 2020 version.

Speak for yourself, please. I disagree with most of that list. I'm fine with the current iteration.

My bad bro! I'm excited that you're enjoying your vehicle! I don't have mine yet so just living the dream through you guys. Take care.
I would do something about the license plate placement. When sitting in the tailgate area (trunk open hanging in the back) you end up scratching yourself on it.

:surprise I would do something about derrier placement. Easier fix.
I would like to see the Drive Mode I last used come up the next time I started the car. It has to be an easy software fix just a little more code than always having it come up in comfort.

Leather seating and seat heaters in U.S. spec R-design

Don’t have one yet, but it would be very nice if the U.S. market XC allowed for rear seat heaters. It is an option in Europe. What gives? It gets cold in the U.S. too! Also I am in disbelief that it is not possible to order an R-design with a leather interior. You can even get a Momentum model with leather but not the R-design. Yet, in Europe you can order an R-design with leather if you want. Why not the U.S.? Same seat design, same factory. This makes no sense to me.

The European delivery Volvo website says you can special order your vehicle with options:

Custom ordering through Overseas Delivery
Another great advantage of our Overseas Delivery Program is the ability to customize your new Volvo with special options. You can build it with select colors, wheels, interiors, inlays and more. You can also add accessories that are only available in Europe. Please note that vehicle options, powertrains, engines and wheels are based on U.S. market specifications.

So what are the "special options"? I called Volvo to ask. Their reply? Nothing, absolutely nothing! (Ok a neck pillow) You can only order a vehicle as you can that would be shipped directly to the U.S. So that paragraph on their site is very misleading. I understand different power trains from what is offered is out of the question. But seating? Really? Very disappointing considering these options are installed in the same vehicle in the same factory.

Pretty sure there's a way to set the default drive mode in the individual driver settings. I need to play around a little more; I'll let you know if I can come up with a more specific place to point you to.
Good luck. I was unable using the driver settings to make it do anything except come up in comfort mode so I'd appreciate it if you find a way. It would be nice if Volvo would tell us one way or the other. They should know without us having to spend an hour or two although I always learn something I didn't know before. I wonder. Does Volvo monitor the XC40 Forum?
My wish list

Just got my 2019 XC 40 T5 R-Design AWD. Love the car.

I have one top wish list and 2 additional.

Looking at the user guide on the TPMS, it mentioned on page 513 "Use an air pressure gauge and check the inflation pressure on all the tires, including the spare tire, at least once a month and before long trips. Volvo strongly recommends buying a reliable air pressure gauge"

So let me get this straight... I have an incredibly technologically advanced vehicle which almost can drive itself and has a TPMS system capable of monitoring when the tire pressures need attention... but I have to buy a $12 tire gauge?? Why can't the system just display a graphic of 4 tires (like on the TPMS screen) and simply display the PSI of each tire? Obviously the system knows in order to determine if the pressure needs correcting.

The two additional is a redesign of the shifter and central console. The human interface of the controls of this car is not always logical. For starters, the gear/transmission shifter it's horrible. It requires a two-step action. For example, to engage reverse or drive, one must move the gear selector twice. This is extremely annoying during parking maneuvers and is very frustrating. Of course the argument could be that I should use the automated parking assistance but the shifter is just very unnatural for me. While you can operate almost every control from the steering wheel and the voice recognition is a nice addition, the central control screen is extremely convoluted and requires a high degree of learning curve. Coming from Volvo, particularly because it sees itself as a safety brand, the central control screen is just unsafe because it is almost impossible to operate safely while driving. There are too many unintuitive multiple taps, swipes and scrolls necessary to navigate the system. In addition, the system is awfully slow to respond. For example, changing a driver profile can take over a minute to load. If there are two things requiring a redesign, it would be the shifter and the control screen. The goal obviously should be to reduce the distraction and the precious seconds’ loss with eyes off the road to do basic functions as changing cabin temperature and audio source.

As with most newer cars, when you stop, once the engine is warm, the XC 40 idles the engine completely down to a point that the engine is shut off (0 RPM). This system would cause an abrupt jerking when restarting. The SUV would lurch forward when starting up from a stop light. It takes a while getting used to but I found out that it is better to release the brakes and wait two second before applying acceleration to avoid the lurching. Aside from those, I just love the car!

Revised TPMS system

Is this too much to ask from a vehicle that can almost drive itself?

Two more wish list items. This one has to do with Central Console. First, I'd like an auxiliary input where one can plug in a headset output to listen to it through the car stereo. Second, a CD/DVD player.
Two more items related to the software that handles music.

First, on the second USB port, if I stick in a USB with MP3 music, I would like to have the ability to play or browse in the order of the file name rather than just song title or artist. I ordered certain songs to play back to back using the file name (by adding numbers in the front). Without the ability to play by file name, I can never hear the Beatles Golden Slumbers Medley (Abbey Road) back to back.

Second, on the digital radio, I would like the title of the song playing to be displayed (just like on Sirius XM). This info is broadcasted in the header and all the other digital radios I know displayed the song title (except for my Volvo .. LOL)
