We just brought home our 2019 R-Design T5 and it's great so far. Just working thru a couple of quirks.

One of them being...with Auto-Stop/Start and auto-parking brake disabled, when at a stop light on even a very slight incline for more than a few seconds, and I take my foot off the brake, the car will actually begin to roll backwards until I give it gas. If I don't hit the gas immediately, the engine idle will eventually take hold, maybe after 1-1.5 seconds. Just enough time to risk rolling into the car behind me if they're too close.

It feels very similar to a manual transmission.

Again, we've disabled Auto-Stop/Start, so it's not that. It just feels like a very weak and/or delayed engine idle. I've never driven a car that behaves like this. Even our 2006 Mini Cooper has an idle that will easily hold its position on an incline, if not gain ground.

As I type this, it's occurring to me that perhaps it's the Comfort drive mode. I'll be sure to test whether this happens in Dynamic mode.

Known issue?

walkbrush,

I just bought a XC40 T5 (4/17/2019) with Premium , Vision, and Multimedia packages. When I test drove the car it was great, however, I was on a flat road. My town is on a mountain so my local driving is mostly an incline. Never noticed before because my Honda CRV never rolled back. I was coming home yesterday and when I stopped at a light I rolled back when I tok my foot of the break. Not good for me and my new car. When I inquired about my really important issue I was advised to use the (A) button. So I took out the car and applied the (A) . it worked, but it launched forward so I took off the (A) and guess what. The Hill Assist kicked in. Now it works just like the Honda CRV. Maybe you can try this ? It should work the same way. The way Hill assist is listed on the CX40 page I assumed it was built in as a safety feature. A real deal breaker for me if I didn't assume it was built into the XC40.

Thanks, Gfallon.

That's helpful. I was only sort of aware of HSA. I'm not really understanding why it you had to activate Auto-Hold Brakes and then deactivate them to get HSA only. Does that mean HSA is only enabled if you toggle Auto Hold once per driving session?

Maybe I'll give auto-hold another try. But I think it felt a bit too jerky before.

Cheers.

Hsa

Good Morning,

I turned off my car and didn't drive it again for about two hours. Brakes kicked in after stop at a traffic light on an incline without applying (A). I hope it continues to engage. Do you think that it is a mechanical problem? I am confused with Volvo's description of a automatic HSA and the (A) which has to be engaged manually. The car should not jump forward like it does when you engage (A). To me that in itself is a problem.

Okay, so I've been trying the Auto-Hold Brakes for the past couple of days. It definitely works as advertised, and I actually like having it on more than I thought I would. It's great for city driving. But I keep finding myself turning it off, because it becomes an annoyance when parking. Especially auto-parking. I'm used to activating auto-park, and only having to work the brake pedal as it instructs you to go forward/reverse as it moves the car into the spot. With auto-hold on, I have to hit the gas with every step. Makes it really difficult to avoid hitting an adjacent car. Doesn't feel very safe.

But according to the manual, I shouldn't need Auto-Hold to avoid rolling back. It claims HSA is always active, unless I'm just reading it wrong.

I think the issue is simply that HSA doesn't engage quickly enough. I'm going to ask our dealer about it when I go back in to get our plates. I'll report back.

Cheers.

EDIT: Oh, by the way, I didn't find Auto-Hold to be jerky at all. I don't like the Auto-Parking Brake mode for that reason. But Auto-Hold is pretty smooth for me. It feels just the same as when Auto-Hold is off and I'm gently letting my foot off the brake, so long as I don't slam on the gas from a dead stop. Again, I really like it 90% of the time. It just annoys me when parking.

Thank you, walkbrush,
I spoke too soon! I am back to the (A), using same as you. I was back at the dealer and asked again about the HSA being built into the car. I told her that where I live in my mountain, hilly, and congested town, and took off the (A), the HSA worked. A couple of days later it stopped working so I had to use the (A) for safety. She said you can't rely on the hill assist stopping. She said some people don't like the (A) so that is why it is optional. I saw your recent post and looked in the manual and found the same explanation you did. I think that there is definitely a problem on Volvo's end with these new first time models and the HSA. I don't seem to be getting too far with my concern. Maybe if enough owners question and complain they will at least look at there own manual and see what the Volvo company is boasting about in its advertising and stated n the manual. Don't understand why drivers would want to roll back a an incline taking a chance of hitting the vehicle in back of them. Where I live everyone is in a rush and if they could be in trunk of your car to get ahead they would there is no distance allowance.
Pleas keep me posted if you have any new information.

Hi, wanted to know if you had any updates? Same thing happens to my 2021 XC40 (and my mom's 2019) and am trying to get Volvo to do something about it so am reaching out to other users with the same issue to try and build a case against Volvo to fix this.

Hi. I have a 2020 R design and this is the most annoying thing about the vehicle. At first I thought that it was a weak idle like it was mentioned before, since it doesn't do it when you're in Dynamic driving mode. But I discovered that the problem lies in the brake characteristic. If you go to the Individual driving mode settings, and change the brake characteristic to dynamic instead of normal, it doesn't roll backwards on a slope. So that's why in Dynamic driving mode it doesn't do it, but it's not the idle, it's how the brakes function. Volvo should change that for sure.
