The Volvo XC40 is said to be going up against the BMW X1, the Audi Q3, and the Mercedes GLA.

All of which are actually quite intense to have as competitors. But Volvo is producing some amazing vehicles, ie. the XC90 which has a very premium look and quite the sharp interior (I find it better than any Audi interior)

How do you think the XC40 will stack up against the big dogs?

Well for one they will never have the sales those long standing rivals do. Volvo will always be in the lower volume range. Much to the extent Buick is in their own competitive respect among the rest.

Buick doesn't have lots of numbers but they do well enough.

Which Buick model will be going against the XC40? I'm very unfamiliar with Buick and, as the commercials state, think it's a grandpa brand haha!
I never said Buick had a rival to the XC40. Put very simply I was trying to give an example of where Volvo products like the XC40 stand among the segment they're in by using a brand with similar low production.

For us we had almost made up our minds to get the Honda CRV, mainly because of its excellent quality and reliability ratings. A CRV Touring AWD has a list price of $34,500 in the US, so very close to the list price of the XC40 Momentum T5 AWD ($35,200). However, when we saw pictures of the XC40 we knew it was going to be our next car. Although less interior space than the CRV (specifically luggage space), the XC40 has a much more appealing design (to us), more safety features and a bigger, more powerful engine. 'Care by Volvo' was an additional advantage. TBH, we never considered BMW, Audi or Mercedes...:surprise

It's no surprise with their first vehicle in this class, that XC40 is getting such high praise. The offerings out of BMW, Audi and Mercedes are all just cookie cutter options in my opinion. They vary very slightly from one model to the next and I think this is the exact reason for the XC40's success. I think it brings a certain level of fun and quirkiness to a segment that's been pretty crowded with "just another crossover".

BMW X1 is inferior competition for the XC40. Drove one yesterday. Fail. Jaguar E-Pace is pretty good but lacks.....something. Mercedes and Audi are nice cars but some factors of styling detract, especially their stuck on iPad infotainment units. IMO, Volvo is the current class leader for the mini lux category.

How do you see the Tiguan SE comparing to the XC40? I have had my eye on the XC40 for a long while, finally test drove it last weekend and loved it, but the VW has many of the same options with a much cheaper price tag. I'm torn. This will be my second car, my first love is a Saab convertible but need more space for a child seat.

Tiguan has never been a solid performer for Dub. I realize they have done a reboot but from what I’ve seen, you hit the nail on the head.....”cheaper”

Looked at and drove the Tiguan it was OK, the engine/trans felt a little 'ratty' not in a bad way just had to wind it up more but not as substantial a feel as the XC40 or the Landrover. I looked at different cars including a Subaru Outback 3.6, MB GLC300 4matic and a Jeep Cherokee. I am replacing a Jeep Liberty which I loved. All/4WD drive is critical to my selection. If this experiment works I will renew or buy it, if not I will go for something with more off road capability.
