Valet parking

I haven't taken my car to a valet yet. Has anyone had a problem with the parking attendant not knowing how to engage the shift lever? I'm thinking of printing and laminating a sign to put on the dash to explain how to use it, so the guys don't accidentally back into something.

That would be a great idea. I had my first experience with a valet last week. I tried to explain to him how to use the gearleaver and he just replied “ don’t worry this is my job and I know how to drive cars”. So I moved to the side and waited to see if the valet will figure it out. And yup took him around 3 mins ?. When I came to pick up the car, the valet called me and said the car would not start. Went down a floor and the car was still in gear when it was turned off and wouldn’t start unless it was set to park or neutral.

I also had trouble. I didn’t even think about explaining the shifter to the valets. When I picked it up, it took a looong time for the car to come back. The valet was pretty annoyed and from his description it sounds like he really jammed the shifter around trying to get it in gear. Also thought about printing a sign and keeping it in my glove box to tape up when I valet it, which is occasionally inevitable here in Chicago.
Thanks you guys for putting this out there. I believe I will type out instructions as well (mainly of my wife):surprise but for Valet as well!LoL

Haha- I have definitely thought about printing out directions for my wife! She once decided to take my Honda S2000 for a spin and she's not really a stick shift driver. That was fun.
I’m so glad you pointed this out! Didn’t even cross my mind but I’ve also noticed the delayed return of a couple of my valets. This explains it! If you laminate a few of those instructions I’ll take one and if you mail it to me will Venmo reimburse you. Thanks again!
This looks like another "Gotcha". Why are people continually reinventing the wheel?
