I'm looking into getting an XC40 recharge, and towing is manditory for me. Very few of them seem to have a tow hook installed. Does anyone know if this is / can be a dealer installed option?

We got ours from the dealer. Comes ready with both 4 pin and 7 pin on the car. Also, the vehicle has a bunch of features for towing that activate when you hook up a trailer, like a light check mode making hookups a bit nicer.

Sadly, no. Only Europe has that style (despite what one of the salesman at the dealer said). I would have loved that.
Really? Was your tow hook installed by the dealer or by the factory?

I also ordered the tow hook (US delivery), but am fully expecting it to be the retractable tow hook that was shown on the order page, and is described in the owner's manual. Should I be concerned?

My understanding (which could easily be wrong) is that there is a difference in the spec for trailers in North America vs Europe. North America doesn’t get the flip down hitch because of this.

I couldn’t find the description of the hitch itself in my manual. Lots of stuff about towing and the towing integrations, but nothing describing the hitch itself. Do you have a link to the hitch description?

I think you are right. I ordered based on what was presented on the ordering page so many months ago, which showed the folding hitch. I just now dug down into the accessories pages for the tow hitch in the US market, and indeed it's a static mounted receiver, slung below the bumper. Seems like it will reduce road clearance a bit. I'm bummed.

I picked up the car I put a deposit on in Oct 2019 today. The factory ordered hitch is the same as on the accessory page. It is NOT the drop down hitch originally ordered. The MSRP of this towbar is $1,125. (versus $1,140 for the retractable hitch) It does not come with ball. It is a 2 inch hitch box.

Mine came with a bar and a ball. Even in a little bag to keep the trunk clean when not in use.

Any comments on towing efficiency? The P8 is thirsty from the start, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to get out of my neighborhood dragging my whitewater raft and gear - about 1500 lbs.

Installed a Stealth Hitch on my 2020 T5. Towed a 7x14 tandem trailer (1500lbs). It did great. Loved the tow backup camera and trailer light check.
