Hope it comes through soon for you. I just picked up my C40 this past Thursday and it had already updated itself to 2.9.
Congrats!!
The car is running android auto, it will never get android auto, just use the same google account you sign into your phone on.
They're different (Google's naming is just horrible). The infotainment system is based on Android Automotive. Whereas, Android Auto is a phone-based experience like Apple Carplay. Using Android Auto is a far superior experience compared to using the in-car Android apps.

Wow! So one of my rants on a thread I started a few days after I got my XC40 has actually been addressed (not that my rant had anything to do with it). Someone at Volvo told me they took away that range indicator below the battery gauge back around 2.3 or 2.4 because..."some customers said the display looked too busy." :-| Display looks fine to me with that there.

Now I'm very eager to get 2.9 in my vehicle.
I had one of the first P8’s and the range was never displayed, not even with version 1.0

The car is running Android Automotive System (AOS), not Android Auto. The AOS platform can run whatever it wants, if it so chooses, even Android Auto, just like it chooses to run CarPlay. No, the reason it's not doing so is purely marketing - Google wants to license AOS directly to the Tier-1 OEM market and thus cover the transportation and mobility worlds at their point of convergence.

Just curious, how was the stability of the software back then?

I remember when I got my XC40 Recharge in late 2021, the software was fine. It was running 1.3 I believe. Haven’t had too many issues except for modem connectivity for a few weeks, but then they pushed new software and it was fixed. Other than that. AAOS has been surprisingly reliable in my experience.

Agreeing about Google's ever-confusing product naming and the major improvement over Android Auto. But Volvo isn't helping either. The current website for my new XC40 Mild Hybrid uses "Google built-in*" a lot Volvo XC40 compact SUV – Feature highlights | Volvo Cars but doesn't seem to be pushing the idea that the entertainment system is actually run by Google and integrates into many other vehicle controls.

"Android Automotive" seems to be used interchangeably in some places with "Google Automotive". Also, the features vary by country, probably because of EU and other country privacy/safety/security laws. In Google terms, "it's complicated". 😂

I'm still waiting on the 2.9 update.

I was actually attracted by Volvo's use of Android Automotive when we were shopping different SUVs.

I am a volunteer Google "Product Expert" for a few of their hardware and software products. Because of that experience, I was prepared for the inevitable bugs and UI inconsistencies. Setting up the vehicle when it was delivered by the dealer, was an "interesting" experience. The salesman wasn't familiar with the details of the keys/profiles/car app/etc. Once again, familiar territory for me knowing more than the salesman!

2023 XC40 B5, still 2.8, no 2.9 update available yet, but if you click on the software release details it already shows the 2.9 notes🫤 (California, US)
Some B4 and B5 variants are excluded from OTA updates ... "This OTA update excludes B4 and B5 variants built before October 3, 2022. These customers are welcome to visit their retailer for the latest software." OTA (Over The Air) Software Updates
I’m still showing as 2.5 being up to date and since my last iOS update it’s so laggy on CarPlay :(

Which doesn't work if your Google account is a Google Apps (i.e. with custom domain) email. It only works with @gmail.com emails...

I never had serious issues. The car always drove me were I wanted to go! Some other people had 12V issues, charging issues and even bricked cars. i had none of these things!

But there were plenty other inconveniences: at the time there was no Volvo app, there were no timers on preconditioning (and charging ) and Maps seemed designed for non-EV’s which was very frustrating on longer trips.

Each software update added some functionality, more comfort and sometimes more range. Maps now has added functionality for EV-use.
These improvements made that the car now meets my original expectations. So I’m generally happy with the car but developments have been frustratingly slow: it took 2.5 years to reach this status (and even now the Volvo app is not yet complete and Volvo’s promises (made in January 22) regarding additional apps have not been kept and customer-communication by Volvo seems absent! )

I am aware of that issue. But my XC40 has a March 2023 production date.

The service manager at my dealer claims the 2.9 update will start rolling out May 29 here in the US. Not confident about that info, but we'll see.
Is Waze and google map through apple carplay supported on the dashboard now?!

I'm picking up my new XC40 mild hybrid Ultimate tomorrow. Can you confirm that I will not be able to use my Google custom domain email address to connect to the car?

There's a post below that says a custom Google email account won't let you sign in to the car system. I have a custom gmail address - [email protected] and I'm picking my new XC40 mild hybrid up tomorrrow. Is the email going to work for me?

I feel silly for asking this but how do you know which variant you have? Or are these just models that use different terms in different markets (ie I have a C40 Ultimate but perhaps it has a different name elsewhere).
B4/B5 are gas powered, mild hybrid variants not available for the C40.

Just had 2.9 installed by dealer after having a minor SRS airbag error code...one thing I've noticed so far is the eta for charging (level 1/2) is finally accurate!

Hi! My guess is it won't. But definitely tell us. :) It will work for your myVolvo ID account. But when adding a Google account (for all the Android features)... that will normally not work. Do tell us your experience. :)

By the way... have you tried with that email, creating a review for an app on Google Play Store (from an Android phone)? Or signing up for Google Family Link? It shouldn't work either with that email...
