Has anyone else had this problem? I recently traveled internationally and did not drive my XC40 Recharge for 2 weeks. When I tried to drive it, there was a loud clunking from the rear of the car that recurred at about 1 knock per wheel revolution. I called Volvo and they took the car to the dealership. It turns out the rear pads had seized to the rotor and all had to be replaced. Whereas most cars have a pin that is inserted in the transmission when put into "park", the electric Recharge with a variable motor instead of a transmission just locks up the rear brakes.

So evidently, leaving the car that long (mine was in a garage in very moderate southern California temperatures) can seize the pads to the rotors. Volvo is going to have to come up with a solution to this.

Has anyone else left their car parked for a long time and had, or not had, any issue like this?

It happens to my 2020 Tesla XLR also. Brakes get wet, and parked for a day or so sometimes not always, they stick when I go to back out of my garage. No big deal. Same thing happens with our 2021 XC40P8. No big deal when you understand what it is all about. And so far, no real damage to brakes or discs. Just a bit of rust that will rub off when the brakes are applied.

Couldn't help but notice my disc were all rusty today especially against the shiny wheel background, as I backed out of garage I did notice a slight thump so turned off OPD and slammed on brakes 3-4 times enroute to grocery store which is only 5 mins away and by the time I got there and checked rotors were shiny new again. I was surprised how quickly they cleaned up slamming on brakes at 20-30mph.

Sticking is one thing, but pad material beingripped off is an issue. Volvo, has a pad design issue. How many Tesla owners have had sticking brakes cause pads to pull apart? I get oxidation can cause problems, but not like what Volvo is having happen. Even my ceramics stick at times, but no loud clunks or thumping when rolling. Sure it is not on every car, but enough Polestars and XC40 Recharges have had it that it is a design issue.

that's harsh, lol.

(but totally true)
You all forget the:
1. IHU issues (resolved)
2. The great key number debacle 2021 (resolved)
3. Evs have ranges which are worse in winter (open)
4. EA used to fail (resolved)
And of course the biggest
5. My voc app does not work. Does not always work. When it does work it does not do what I want. (open)

I had actually thought the brake issue was in a semi resolved/pending state in that they will stick and fail for some people until you get the ceramic pads and that maybe one day Volvo might fix it with Volvo ceramic pads.

VOC has never worked or pairs on my 21 even after factory reset. It works most of the time on our 22, but at times it just is in limbo. Brakes are only resolved if you get your own ceramic pads. Volvo hopefully will redesign the pads, but honestly I will stick with the Powerstop pads I have, even if they need replacing some day. True about IHU, it has been a while since I have seen any posts about IHU issues. And EV range in cold is not a Volvo specific issue, but of course the Volvo lower initial range just makes that worse.

My rear brakes stick together after driving in the wet and after sitting one night in the garage...clunk!
As I'm driving the car primarily with one pedal drive the brakes looked really bad, so I made some miles without "one pedal drive" and also made some harsh breaking..
After that I had the impression that they don't stick together that quick.

The change from one pedal to not one pedal made zero difference as that is not how regenerative braking works on this car.

That said you use it hard braking makes a huge difference. It can turn a rusty pad to shiny. I do this when my car is very wet.

Sad that we have to do this but at least it is something we can do.

Happened to me today. Have not driven car for about 2 weeks put it in garage after big rain storm. Got the loud clunk and then the thump. Car has 5k miles on it. Another C40 problem.

It happened to me today. Put car in garage 2 weeks ago after rain storm. Got the clunk (loud) and thumping noise. This should not be. Another C40 problem.

Yes...this has happened to my 40 T3 manual, 2022 model. Handbrake pads lock to the disc after being wet and then not used for a few days. Couldn't shift the car at all. This has happened on numerous occasions but not to the degree where it locks, sometimes just a loud noise as they release. Got my dealer and Volvo Uk customer services involved but at inspection nothing could be found. Asked a mutual motoring correspondent friend to investigate, then things happened. The rear disc pads have been replaced by "comfort" pads, which are a softer compound and should not "stick" to the disc. Only done this week so will have to wait and see if issue resolved.
Volvo said they have never had an issue reported before but when I said "it's reported on a forum", they replied they don't take any notice from any unauthorised comments. Perhaps they now should.

Not true. These "sticky brake" complaints are documented in Volvo Technical Journal article TJ 36169.3.0 -

My Volvo dealer replaced mine last year with "comfort pads" - and they referenced this article for warranty coverage.

EDIT: I've had no issues with the new "comfort" brake pads for the past year.
Any chance you know the part number of the "comfort" pads they put on? Just wanted to compare notes with the part numbers listed when they replaced mine last year.
