The salesman suggested that I leave the red key in the car in case I ever want to let my daughter, etc use the car.....however this week I attempted for the first time to "remote start" my car using the Volvo on Call app and it wouldn't accept my command and kept saying the "key was in the car"....is that right? So I need to remove the red key?

I was also told to leavethe red key in the car by the sales person. Started having similar issues with keys. I went to Volvo service, they said DO NOT leave red key in car. Removed red key and key error messages disappeared.

Red Key & Remote Start via On Call App

Seems like you can't leave the "red key" in the car AND use remote start. Anyone found a way around this? Just got the car a few days ago and LOVE it, but would be very cool if I can just leave the Red Key in the car and still use the remote start!

I leave the red key in the car and use remote start all the time. You probably need a software update.

I have had my XC40 for a month and use the remote start everyday with the red key always stored in the car and never had an issue with it remote starting. You probably just need an software upgrade.

Should red key stay or go?

I was also told to keep the red key in the console and have been able to start my car remotely with the key remaining in the car. However, the last few times, it would not start remotely. I received an error message that it was due to a key being in the car.

Not a silly question. The red key is so you can loan the car via the app to someone when you are elsewhere - you should go back to the dealer and get it. The sport key is something different and looks something like a USB.

Hi All: this is probably a silly question. I did not get a red colored key from the dealer. Is this the same as the sport key?
I leave the red key in my car and have found that if the doors are unlocked and you try to remote start the car it won’t. then if you lock the doors bia the app and try again, the message is thst I left a key in the car and it still won’t start.
I suppose this can be remedied by removing the red key and ghff e.g. n the car should start after locking the door.

I followed all the steps in setting up a driver profile for my teenager but when trying to connect the red key to her profile, I do not get a red key option and the key will not connect to her profile. I called volvo and the customer service line and they say it should connect. I do not see any software updates showing on my screen. What am I doing wrong?

I have the same issue! I can’t set up the red key following directions I found on Volvo. It said there should be an option in driver profiles that say red key but I didn’t see one at all.

There is a lot of confusion around the red key. First of all, the XC40 is the only Volvo model that comes with it or came with it, as far as I know. I heard they stopped giving it out, is that true? Anyway, the red key is not the same as the orange key that comes with other models. The orange key can be used to set limitations such as the poster mentioned.. top speed, radio volume, etc. The red key is only used for car sharing. I’ve left it in my car and remote start works. Honestly I wish Volvo would just give two regular old keys. The vast majority of US buyers at least will never use either the red or orange key features.
