Hi Everybody, just a short introduction:
First-time Volvo owners - a 2021 Thunder Grey Metallic XC40 P8 Recharge. Being a First Edition model, it's fully loaded with all packages and every option, including some we did not want (e.g. the bigger 20" wheels), but had to buy as configured, with no discounting!! Overall, wife and I are very happy with the car.
We are long-time EV owners (including Tesla) - currently have a Smart EQ fortwo, which we intend to use predominantly for in-city scooting about, and to engage the XC40 for more extensive driving.

Hi My name is George - live in Welland Ontario - have had an XC40 for two and half years - in January made a deal to trade it for the XC40 Recharge - was supposed to take delivery on March 15/21 - dealer advised a week prior to delivery car was being held at port for a recall - I think it has to do with the On Call service - not sure if it is an over the air update or how it would be done - no firm new delivery date - have you taken delivery of your car? and have you heard about any recalls? Anxious to finally get our hands on the Recharge - hopefully soon.

Sorry to hear about your delivery wait (what a bummer!), but I believe that all software related delays are now behind us - fingers crossed! My wife and I are also waiting for our P8 Recharge, which is currently at the port of Halifax, NS. When we ordered the car a month ago, the dealer was quite clear up front to expect delivery at the end of March or early April because of unspecified software upgrades that had to be done to all P8 cars while at port. Although this is our first Volvo ownership ever, we have dealt with the dealer principals directly for many years at their other franchise dealerships. Their communications and competencies have always been at the highest level, and we trust that they'll advise us immediately as soon as they get any updates from Volvo head office.
In the meantime, I find the Volvo Canada website quite good too as they has outlined (under the Owners/Support tab) incremental updates timetable to the Volvo On Call app for the Recharge Pure Electric. We're in the London area and look forward to meeting up with you and introducing ourselves properly once we get our cars. Hopefully, all the lockdowns are lifted this summer!

Sounds like you have a very responsive dealer - having an ongoing relationship definitely helps too - so from what you are saying based on dealer provided info in the next few weeks we could see the vehicles! That will be good. Yes the website does provide some good information I was checking that out last night too. Speaking of London - we lived in Mount Brydges from 1990 to early 1998 - went into London lots - beautiful area - in fact I went to Western University from 1977 thru spring of 1981 - still own some property out towards Petrolia, so go that way at least a half dozen times a year.
Thanks for replying was good to hear from you.

Good morning - last day of March - April tomorrow - have you rec'd any update from your dealer regarding a potential delivery date? I rec'd some info early last week saying the Company had not provided any additional information and that the timeframe was still end March/first week of April.

Hi: I am a bit afraid to talk to the dealer in case of hearing of further delays :)
So, we're assuming that no news is good news. But yes, it is the end of March now and there is reason to get hopeful: Judging from several posters online, Volvo has completed its tinkering and authorized release of cars at ports and people in the USA have reported taking physical delivery in the past couple of days. One thing I know from past experience is that once cars leave the port of Halifax (usually on the train) they go to this vast receiving complex in Vaughan in the GTA, where they are then sorted and trucked to dealers. And during that entire transport process, dealers seem to not know the exact whereabouts of the units except that they just show up on their lot! This seems to be the recurring theme (I've seen this happen a few times in recent years). So now, I'm more inclined to not fret too much wondering where the car is!
I understand cars with Heat Pumps are now the latest victim to experience further delivery delays. However, our cars should not be subject to this, I hope. Mine does not have the heat pump option, which I wanted but could not get, as the dealer advised me at the time of ordering that Volvo Canada had stopped configuring this option, although earlier orders did have it - what about your car in this regard?
If I hear anything from my dealer, I'll post it here right away...

Yes - in the same boat - wanted it but as you indicate was not available as an option/accessory at the time made the deal for the car - agree that no news is good news so hopefully in the next couple of weeks will hear something positive!!

Just got an update from my dealer:
  • All software updates have been completed by Volvo
  • They are shipping the car from Halifax, and will let me know more when they have a better idea of its arrival at the dealership

Great News!! Hopefully I will hear from my dealer tomorrow - as stated before I think you have a pretty responsive dealer that is definitely customer focused. So a week by train to Toronto and then on to your dealer for pre-delivery etc. might be able to have it in 2 weeks. I wonder if once they get the bugs worked out of the heat pump if it would be an option that could be installed after the fact? Maybe with all the pumping involved and the battery cavity it might not be feasible.

Yes I hope you get the call soon too - I will post a pic of it on the weekend. Will be interesting to see if the dealer has this form for us to sign regarding the future OTA updates for the varies features that have been discussed on the Forum. Also I will ask if the Heat Pump can be installed at a later date or if cost wise that may even be feasible.

If it weren't for the new stay-at-home order announced today, I'd be tempted to camp out at the dealership lot, LOL.
Ya, a waiver agreement regarding missing features might be forthcoming, but that's better than more delays, right?
And please post those pics!

Hope everything goes well with your delivery today.

Received an e-mail from my dealer:
"We're expecting your car any day. Meanwhile, here's a link to the XC40 Quick Guide. Please review it in preparation."

Thanks - Yes I go to pick it up at 2PM - have everything ready - just need to get the bank draft this morning. So should be home with it late afternoon - thank goodness even with the stay at home order right now car dealerships can serve customers based on appointments and 25% capacity. Thanks for the link I will check that out this morning to be better prepared. Will let you know our first experiences with the car - just glad we did not have the heat pump which has delayed deliveries in the US until a fix deployed.

So based on the email from your dealer you likely will get your towards the end of next week - I think our experiences will be quite different from others that we have been reading about! Should be good!!

It is very quiet and accelerates quickly. Even when doing 100 Kim’s an hour and u want to pass someone - it goes - better pull out quick or u will be in the other cars back end.
Lots of tech will try to get familiar with some of it this weekend. Google is operating system in side just say hey google take me to whatever and it will set up the route and if it is too far for one charge it will recommend charging stops along the way.
Say hey google set temp or turn on seat heater or steering wheel heater.
Will set up the individual driver profiles and learn its features during the next week or so.

Dealer salesman took care of all the paperwork - was going to set up the Volvo on Call but could not get it to transfer from our existing car - so he sent an email to the Canadian support office that dealers have access too and here is the response:

He also did not review or ask to sign the form regarding the planned future updates for this year and next as our US friends have indicated. Next the dealer delivery specialist spent time going over the vehicle regarding the set up and operation etc. I did not let them know that Volvo support already had info online re: all the updates - did not think it was worth it to spend time talking about things they were not aware of. So either the info has not been passed along in the dealership or Volvo has not kept the dealers up to speed - either way based on the info from the support function online we know it will get updated during the course of this year.
Once you get your delivery it will be interesting to see what information they provide you for comparison.
Will have my better half take it for a drive today to get a handle on how it operates since she will be the primary driver of this car.

That's a very nice looking car - Congratulations!
Thanks for the update. It's amazing your dealer got his response back so quickly from the brass in Richmond Hill.
I agree with your feeling that by and large the setup and attitude of Volvo and the dealers up here seem to be somewhat more conducive to providing customer experiences in line with our expectations. Maybe its just a temporary situation down south because of the nasty pandemic right now which will get straightened out?
Hope we get our car too (next week?) and then maybe we'll bounce off discovering features/quirks that might be applicable to models here.
Meanwhile, so good to hear that everything went well with your delivery process. Enjoy your new baby and happy motoring!

Thanks - yes good idea about sharing features etc. and set ups - I find the screens much simpler than our 2019 XC40 Gasoline model - but since it is now a google base it is different to work with.
I had asked about installing heat pump down the road - salesman thought it might be cost prohibitive - will have to inquire about that thru the support function at some point.

You likely have checked out the support pages recently but in case you have not they updated some of the info on the 8th of April - here is the link:
XC40 Recharge Pure Electric | Support and legal articles | Volvo Support (volvocars.com)
Instructions on how to Handle OTA updates when they are downloaded to the car and also pushing the On Call to Mid 2021 vs. spring and additional items to late 2021 early 2022.
My wife liked the car - she found it to be peppy - in other words quick get up and go. She found the driving experience to be very similar to our 2019 XC40. Paired our phones to the car - set up the individual keys in driver profiles one for me and one for her.
The one pedal drive is interesting - would not use it for highway driving as you need to coast more - but it works well when driving in town/city once you get a feel for it. I would assume that as you let off the accelerator pedal and it starts braking the rear brake lights must come on for drivers behind you since using the one pedal you have no need to touch the brake unless you gauge the distance incorrectly. When you open up the climate function to full screen there is a separate settings icon so you can set up some of the functions so the car is ready for you when you get in like seat heat on steering wheel heat on etc.
Have not used any of the extra apps yet - that is something to play with once I get more experience with the car.
One thing of note when we went for a short drive around town for my wife to get familiar with it found the A/C did not seem to be very cool even when setting to the low setting vs. auto and temp control - perhaps did something wrong - later when I was paring my wife's phone while in the garage I turned on the air and it blew colder. Wondering whether the A/C issue is not only related to the heat pump but also when just driving that the battery power the car needs to operate there is not enough provision for the power to operate the compressor and condenser properly - just guessing will have to monitor that to see if we experience that again. It was 26 degrees outside when we did that drive so not overly hot but hot enough that the A/C should have blown colder.
Here hoping your dealer calls with a pick up date tomorrow!!
