I took delivery of my my23 xc40 recharge ultimate and had a propulsion messages yesterday including the little turtle logo which went away after some minutes.
Had to drive to dealer which confirmed there was a message but couldn’t find the reason, so they did a total software upgrade. Took them 1.5 hours to update and test.
I suit RO I hurt when I was asked for 23 euros for the update as it’s their protocol even though I have 4 years and 8 months of warantee left. Unbelievable
Hello, sorry to hear this…. You are going to have the same problem that several users have... also it coincides that they are all finished Ultimate I don't know if this has something to do.... because the cases that I know of are all Ultimate with all the equipment. we are going to start calling it “death of the turtle”. Not even changing the battery seems to solve it. We have a serious problem. Greetings

Hello, how are your cars? Any more turtle? Mine is still in the workshop, they are replacing the battery that came from Sweden. It has been there for almost a month. I'm riding with a xc40 core single engine, I released it myself and I've done about 1000 km with no problems on it. Greetings

Mine is still in the shop. 10 weeks now for this fault. Still no idea when I'll be getting it back. I've got a base model Hyundai Kona as a loan vehicle.

This week marks 6 months of my vehicle being unavailable to drive in the 9 months of ownership.

Volvo really needs to do the right thing and give you a new car and take that one back to Sweden to study …

It would be good for you. For their reputation and for them as they might be able to learn from your car.

I'm sorry to hear this, in your case they have decided to open the battery case to repair the sensor. In my case they have decided to change the complete battery. I am not sure that this is the solution because there is a case like ours in which 3 batteries have been changed and the problem was not solved, in the end this user's car was changed for a c40.

Completely agree, I am thinking of requesting a new one if with this battery change the problem persists or the turtle appears again...

Not sure if you’ve seen this yet from the ACCC. Maybe have a read of it for when you decide to pull the pin. There’s a bit about rejecting the car if it’s not repaired within a reasonable time.

Also Google ‘Sally Morphy Range Rover’. She took Land Rover to court and won.

Latest update: Volvo Corp have denied the use of any other type of sealant. So it needs to come from Germany. Was told today it'll be at least 2+ more weeks. By the time I get the car back (assuming I get it back straight away after the sealant arrives), it'll be 9 months ownership and 6 of those months in the shop getting repaired.
So I posted the ^above on Jan 31st. Today is Feb 17 and I just got a call from the dealership. There is still no sign of the sealant. It was meant to be express posted but maybe someone didn't get the memo? I'm just exhausted with this whole thing at the moment. Like people who ask "Have you got your car back yet?" (because it has been months), and I have to tell the same story over and over again. Even they are just shocked at how long this has taken. It is un-freaking-believable.

That’s not a good advert or recommendation. Volvo better realize they’re harming their brand

Hello, I have my car again, with a new battery, for the moment everything is going well, there are no turtles, the battery is completely new. I have to say that the Volvo has behaved well and has repaired it in a relatively short time, it entered the workshop on January 25 and has been repaired today, February 17. I will keep you informed if there are any news.

Regards

I own an early 2023 XC40 Recharge delivered just before Christmas 2022. After a month I started getting "Propulsion system failure" warnings. On one occasion the car shutdown completely at an intersection. I got out of the car, locked it, and then entered the car again. The system started up, but I still was getting propulsion system warnings periodically. I made an appointment with the dealership, and was provided a loaner car for the day. At the end of the day, I picked up the car and was told that a software update had been completed and the problem should be resolved. I got one mile down the road when a propulsion system warning happened again; turned around and returned to the dealership. After two additional days, the service department indicated that they found a loose wiring connection that was causing the problem. The car has been fine for the last several weeks.

I hope my experience has added additional information to the Volvo knowledge base and others with the same or similar issue can benefit.

It's good to know, thanks, although they have changed the whole battery, I hope that at least they have put all the connectors correctly, I will inform you if the fault has been corrected, so far everything is fine, in my case it was a temperature sensor of one of the battery modules, in the diagnosis connecting to the computer it gave them a temperature sensor failure in one of the battery modules, take this information into account as well, let's see if together we can serve for later cases, thank you very much all.

Let me add my grief to this list
I have an early 2023 XC40 twin current mileage 5512 km
Yesterday, on a Sunday I returned to my car to have the dreaded message. Having previously been aware of concerns expressed here i got our locked the car and then reentered.
This time I got the turtle, and when trying to drive had the rodeo experience, rocking and bucking as if riding in a rodeo!.
The rodeo experience stopped when I got to about 3-5 kph.
I called the Volvo Assist line, after some 15 minutes on hold I was told that on weekends RACV, our local auto association service truck would be dispatched, expected arrival 60 minutes.
While waiting I locked and opened a few times, after a time drove it again, this time without the rodeo experience, but still the turtle, and max 28kph
As the 1 hour wait for the service truck had passed, and still not arrived, I again exited, locked and reentered to find the turtle had gone.
The error message propulsion system service required remained.
I cancelled the service call and drove home.
This morning the error message has gone. I have been able to book a visit to our local dealer so will see what they find.
As I have to drive to Melbourne airport tomorrow I thought I would call Volvo Melbourne to see if they could look at it while I am away for a few days. Melbourne Volvo's first available service date is 16th March, 24 days away. Im glad I don't live in Melbourne!

Oh no! That is EXACTLY what happened to me the first time - the bunny hopping. This was back in May 2022, and the car was towed to the dealership and the next day they did a software update and took the car for a test drive. It was all fine for a little bit then the car broke down on them while on the test drive.

So if you need to be at the airport on time tomorrow, I personally wouldn't rely on the car. You could be stranded.

As you probably read with me, the bunny hopping issue was due to a faulty BECM.

HOPEFULLY what you experienced is just a "glitch", but I can imagine it has rattled your confidence in the vehicle.

I don't think the problem is the 12v battery. Like right now the car won't do anything because the 12v battery isn't being charged, but it still currently has plenty of charge. Everything still works - I just can't drive the car because the 12v battery isn't charging.

My HV battery is still showing 34%, where it should be showing at least 50-51%.

Again (just a gut feeling), I think the problem is one of the battery modules inside the main battery, and I think this is all related to the original issue I had at the start of this thread. Before I went on that long drive (in the very first post above), I charged to 100%. I had never done that before and it was the first time since picking up the car when I took delivery that the battery had seen 100%. I see many people who get the "Propulsion System" error that not long before they have it - they charged to 100%.

Some people have hypothesized that at 90-100% charge the battery does some sort of rebalancing of all the cell modules and this can expose issues with modules that won't balance correctly - thus causing the issue.

I just had this gut feeling when I had the most recent breakdown and they said "Oh yeah a software update will fix that", I just knew that was a long stretch of the imagination. When I broke down on the side of the highway before, it "felt" like a hardware issue. Everything just suddenly giving up the ghost.
I'm sure you really, really don't want to have to revisit this but have they found a solution?
