Got my P8 I early May. Car always sounded very quiet (like an EV should!) over the summer -- even with A/C on.

Over the last several weeks, I've heard a very noticeable, medium-pitch whine coming from the front of the car whenever it's on. We are getting into the cooler months where I live, and I'm wondering if this is the Heat Pump in operation.

Anyone experiencing this? Is it the Heat Pump? Is it normal operation?

I can hear high pitch whines fairly often on mine. At high speeds I hear it far more often. It's pretty minor but can get annoying. I have found it is heard more often when I accelerate. I think it's normal but I don't love it haha

I think they added a humming sound feature to alert people or anybody close to the vehicle for safety. Where you in the drive mode? If not, it might be the hvac system or the heat pump as you mentioned.

No it's way more quiet than that. I have very good hearing but it's so slight I think most adults wouldn't be able to hear it. The humming sound is loud and at low speeds.

When I first got the P8 I sat at the lights irritated by all the high pitch sounds the cars fans make. I hate fan noise. I would laugh internally as externally would not just looked creepy at how this was meant to be silent.

Over the intervening months since may I have gotten used to the fans (or more age induced hearing loss has occurred) and no longer notice most of the fan noise.

If you want to hear a lot. Charge from low teens to 90 at a 150 charger. The sounds after that are not high pitch but they certainly are loud :)

Yeah the issue is my youth and good hearing haha. I didn't use earbuds with loud music as a teenager either so my hearing is really good. I'm curious why charging at a 150 charger makes it louder?

I assume it gets hot and needs serious cooling after charging.

More than likely the AC/Heatpump system operating normally. The compressor can make varying levels of noise based on how fast its turning (lower pitch at low speeds, higher pitch at higher speeds).

Mine started producing a weird noise at high speeds -- it's like a rattling and sounds like something stuck in the console or loose. It's driving me insane. If I play music loud enough, i dont hear it. If windows are open, i dont hear it either. I think something must be loose in the dash. I may make an appointment for it but I'm worried they'll think I'm crazy.

They are not mental health specialists :) (joke) if you have a rattles that needs fixing.

However evs do make a lot of different noises.

What was the temperature (external) when you heard the rattle. How fast for how long? Could you record it so we can hear it?

Good luck let us know how it goes.

It generally happens when I’m driving faster - above 40 MPh on highways and is a consistent rattling noise. Hopefully can hear in this short clip. Any ideas? Recording is a good idea for the dealer too.

I definitely do not get that sound. Almost sounds like a lead or such got stuck in the fans ….

Yes it’s making me crazy. It sounds like something stuck in a vent or a piece of the dash is loose or something.

Get that to a dealership ASAP !!! Your ev should not torture you …

Take the recording with you.
