Noise from the front driving over speed bumps?

3326 Views 35 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Greg S
When I drive my November 2023 (4000km) XC40 P6 over speed bumps there is a sound coming from the front. After extensive searching for the source the dealer found the top bearings of the shocks worn/damaged.
Apparently this is a known issue and a new version of these top bearings are on the way.

Has anyone heard of this before on the XC40? Came across a post on another forum with a guy having driven only 800km’s with his brand new car when the sound appeared.

oh yeah also me! Mine 2023 P6 3500km, It is like knocking sound from front right wheel area… I will see dealer next days maybe same issue!
Really poor of Volvo having bearing issues at this time and age and after building cars for so many years.
Yeah.. You hear only from one side or both?
Both sides. Also some kind of knocking in the rear but difficult to say. Once the modified top bearings are available will have the fronts replaced first.
Interesting, I've been listening to knock sounds as well (MY23 P6 bought in Oct 2022), sometimes they seem to come from the front, others from the back. I also hear it sometimes when I'm just taking a turn.

But there is no vibration nor other signal that may tell that something is wrong with the car. @Wolfs XC, @Dan999 did you notice anything else besides the knocking sounds?
My P6(C40) has 3500kms are back from the front suspension. They'll change something, I don't know what it is yet.
The noise from the rear comes from two black pieces in plastic, that are under the 2nd compartment of the trunk, just lift the carpet and the said plastic pieces are found. One is in the middle of the trunk, next to the central seat, the other on the left side of the trunk.
I running now with another P6(XC40) for 4 days and it's the same....

Thanks André, gonna check that out. I actually think the noise comes mostly from the back so it may very well be due to those pieces.

Correct, no vibration or other issues.
The problem for me, with the Knock, knock when passing on degraded surfaces or speed bumps, seems to me to come from the suspension on the right side; from reopened to bearings failing something is not right there and of course being an electric car you can see that more and more.

This Knock Knock, is a noise as if the fork of the bicycle needs to be tightened or the steering column of the car is loose and when there is pressure in this area it is heard.

Rear, try to lift the carpet of the second cargo compartment and at these points below move the black pieces that are here. The noise from the rear part for me are those parts that are plastic and don't have any rubber in the connection with the plate to not have the referred noise, shake them and that's what I feel in progress stronger acceleration/deceleration or floor imbalances .

I already relate the two situations, the service car is the same, I hope to try the third car this week; and that Volvo recalls the cars because there is no quality control and no bypass passes both cars.

i have this since day 1. somewhere from the suspension. sometimes it gets noisier sometimes not so much.
i also have vibration at higher speeds 60mph+ but only for few miles. feels like the vibration from the lane assist getting stuck
The suspension noise (knock knock) on the right side ended with the replacement of said bearings or stops on the suspension tower.

It turns out that the noises do not disappear from the rear car, from the front and now there seems to be something in the steering column/axle, in addition to having noises detected in some moments... that the C40 always has the windows open, and they don't. There will also be some leakage or rubber from the small glass to be replaced there.

Between 2 C30 and one that I still have and a V60 B4 that I had, I didn't even know Volvo in this car that I have.... being an electric car like Volvo sells, a brand that says that in 2030 it's only electric cars that sells, there's a lot to do yet.
?? All in Portuguese or some other language, don’t understand a word you are writing
If you still don't have the car, what are you doing in these forums?
yes i experience the same knocking sound since Day 01. It doesnt affect the driving experience, it is only during when the car going over a small bump at slow speed. I didnt bother to do anything about it until after 6-7 months when i was at the service centre replacing the brake pad. They later found the knocking sound from the front suspension due to some bearing / mounting (i dont know if they are the same thing).

After they have replaced it, it was ok for few weeks, then back again. I went back, and they replaced the same parts again. This time it lasted for 2 months, and then the knocking sound back again. The SC claimed that they have a poor quality parts. I am thinking, how can i be so unlucky keep getting the faulty parts, i am already on my 3rd set now, and the issue still not resolved.

Come April, it will be 1st year anniversary so is due for routine maintenance. I am going to get them to check again. High chance they going to just do the same thing again.

INSANITY is to keep doing the same thing EXPECTING different result

I used to have the vibration when going high speed (above 160km/h), went to tyre shop and get the balancing done. Then problem solved
My car is going tot the dealer end of next week for replacement of the top bearings. There is no new version yet but I was getting so annoyed by the noise that I did not want to wait any longer.
