Anybody thinks having no Start/Stop button in the car and relying on presence of a butt in the driver seat is a good idea ?

Lights.

Also the climate controls.

And the wipers.

Quite often I want to sit in the car without the headlights/taillights on or the climate control running.

Also - there is lots of humming/buzzing noise when the vehicle is powered which goes away when you turn it off.

in the Recharge I have to either tap “settings”,”controls”, scroll scroll, “power off”, “power off”.
or turn the lights and climate control and wipers off (and hope I remember to turn them on again).

Well there is not a big issue not to have an off button (albeit it is always better when you are in control of things with fingers and not with the butt), but an on button will be handy. Often I go away from the car for a minute or two and restarting infotaiment and climate control is annoying. Please give us an "on" or "steady" button that we can keep the car "on" once car thinks it should be off and give us a dog or camping mode in which we can use climate sstem and infotaiment an indifenitly lenght of time (or until, for instance, baterry is on 20%, or any percentage or time you set). And give us a option that you can charge phone while not in the car.

I think it's a bad idea:

  • At the beach, want to roll down the windows and play some music, no can do.
  • Stopping in a convenient store to get sweets, passenger loose music, heat, cooling. I haven't tested it, but I assume if you have the automatic closing of the sunroof, it would also close.
  • Nighttime, as I was getting off passenger said they could not open the door because child lock was activated. I went to unlock the doors but the lights on the buttons inside the doors went off when I got off the seat. I had to get back in the car to have the lights in the buttons come back on. Thinking about it now maybe the unlock button on the keychain would have done it. But then again, these lights could turn off when the door is closed, so it's not related to having a start/stop button, but this goes to show the amount of thought Volvo put in the ergonomic of this vehicle.
  • If you open the rear doors with no one in the driver seat, interior lights do not turn on. I don't know if they do if I'm in the driver seat.

As far as saving some operation to the driver. Before I open the door, I always press the stop button for the music, out of politeness for whoever can be around the car. So no step save here, but that's just me. As far as getting in, I have to press the screen 3 times. Once to remove the warning about the USB device (for music) not being supported. Then give permission for AudioWagon to access the files on the USB device. Also have to press the “don't ask again” option which is only useful as long as the vehicle is on. Finally press the play button.

Hmm...this is the first time I've actually seen people wanting the start/stop button back in an EV. Of the 3 EVs I have regular access to (C40, Model Y, fat etron), only the etron have a start/stop button and I much prefer not having one. To me an EV doesn't have an engine that needs starting, so eliminating the start button removes an unnecessary action. Where Volvo should have done a better job is to incorporate some modes to allow the car to be active while the driver leaves for a period of time. They could probably copy Tesla's Camp Mode to get it done.

At the beach, want to roll down the windows and play some music, no can do.
If you turn on Parking Climate, open the windows, leave the car, and reach in to turn on the music (I can only reach from passenger side), it does play without anyone in the driver's seat. Parking Climate only runs for 30 minutes, but I believe you can activate it again when it runs out. Although it may not be a great idea to run HVAC for too long in the XC40/C40 due to efficiency concerns. It's far from ideal, but at least it's possible to roll down the windows and have music play for 30 minutes.

Stopping in a convenient store to get sweets, passenger loose music, heat, cooling. I haven't tested it, but I assume if you have the automatic closing of the sunroof, it would also close.
You can activate Parking Climate and have HVAC running after you leave the driver's seat. I think most of the functions in the center screen are accessible in this state without someone in the driver's seat.

If you open the rear doors with no one in the driver seat, interior lights do not turn on. I don't know if they do if I'm in the driver seat.
I checked our C40 and opening the rear door without someone in driver's seat does turn on the interior "dome" lights. However the illumination on the door cards don't light up until someone sits in the driver's seat. This again seems like an issue with Volvo's implementation instead of not having a start button.

In our C40 pressing the pause/play button on the volume dial turns the car on if the driver has got out. I tested this as a passenger when my wife got out and it turns on the radio and climate controls. I think the keys need to be in the car of course, but it worked for me.

You can turn off the car by holding that button in for 5 seconds and selecting the power off car option on the central display. You can also select power off from the Controls Menu, press the settings cog icon, select controls, if you scroll down to the bottom you have power off and on the other side, power on.
