No Music from USB ?

4832 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  improvius
Today I attached a usb drive with songs, and Nothing happened ! No app could recognize the drive. And I tried with all usb entrances.

What a shame.

Anyone had a different experience or shall we live without our own Music?

I'm afraid humans aren't permitted to have their "own" music anymore. Everything MUST be a streaming subscription. ;)

But seriously - no, the Android 10 Automative OS in our cars does NOT provide built-in support for direct browsing/playback of media on local USB storage. It's just something that Volvo and/or Google never got around to. Streaming apps were always the priority. I'm curious to see if this has changed in Android 11 (part of the upcoming 2.0 OTA update from Volvo).

I tried the AudioWagon app from the Play Store - pretty useless, at least for USB drives with large numbers of songs. It has to re-scan and re-index every file, every time it starts up - just to be able to browse the drive contents. This took nearly an hour with my 12,000 song USB stick!

There's a setting for re-indexing. You can change it to manual mode. That way it only needs to re-index if you change the files.

A good thing is AudioWagon will play high-res 24/96kHz files.

Installed Audiowagon. It worked perfect.

Only problem was how to format my 64gb pen-drive in FAT32 mode (required per Audiowagon), but the FAQ in their site recommends an app for it.

This app should be Standard in Volvos !
Audiowagon works well; no doubt. Not the best but pretty good. As far as formatting in FAT32, you can do that with any PC or Mac. Just look it on YouTube for the computer system you have. No special software or program is needed. Another option for "streaming" music would be to get an old phone or device that has bluetooth (of course) and use it as your media storage and pair it to your car for playing all your tunes.

One thing I like about Audiowagon is that it doesn't have gaps between tracks. Every HU I've had for the past 20 years has had some sort of short gap, which is super annoying when listening to albums where some tracks flow into each other. But so far listening to albums on Audiowagon sounds seamless on those transitions.

Hi. My car cannot recognize usb drives at all even w AudioWagon.
Is it still working for you? And if so what format is the drive?
Maybe share make and model of the drive? TIA.

Just tried this- installed AudioWagon.
used old USB2.0 drive formatted in a pc as Fat32- look at properties to check or format in a PC not apple machine.
Worked a treat, with the drive which is USBA plugged into a USBC extension dock.
Files are in .flac format which were generated when copying from Cds to hard drive years back.
Sound output is excellent

please go to the url, and follow the procedure
I can confirm USB audio works with Audiowagon app. You just have to format your USB to Fat32. In the Audiowagon settings, you have to click and agree to their terms, otherwise it won't work.
My Volvo XC-60 2023 shows an error "unsupported device" for USB memory stick but AudioWagon is able to play audio files from it. Only one USB port can do it, so it is not possible to connect iPhone and memory stick at the same time. My Lexus does that from any USB port and without any problems and immediately without any long scan.

MOST cars can do this, but not newer Volvos running AAOS. The built-in software does not include an app to play music from USB mass storage devices. If you REALLY need this functionality, either use a 3rd-party app like AudioWagon or find a different car.

Only one of the USB ports provides a data connection; the other is merely for charging.

The long scan only needs to be a one-time thing with Audiowagon, unless you put in a whole new USB drive or wipe and reload it.
