Sure delays could be possible. EX90 costs around 2X an EX40 so makes sense for Volvo to fix high end car first.

 

That’s my concern….given the problem that this caused to the xc90, their Flagship, one would think that Volvo is going to to be extremely careful in the fix for these cars. If not Volvo’s image and sales output could turn extremely negative. While we all look forward to this update, it would appear that it’s not coming any time soon. JMO….

 

Software wise it shouldn't have any impact because the software for our cars is developed by Infosys while for the EX/ES lineup it's HaleyTek.

But I do have some doubts that the new UI will roll out this year for our cars due to technical challenges. They need to find a way to optimize the new UI for our slower CPU's. A new software update is currently scheduled for week 46 (10th November) but it doesn't look like the UI update.

 

what makes you say it's not with the new GUI if I may ask? the size of the installation file? It stands to reason that 3.7 (as we can see in my25.5 and my26 models), already has the new GUI, but simply not active for my22-25

if it is indeed not available with the November update, volvo will miss their release date target (not their first time at all)

Seems the 21-25 EVs will need an upgraded IHU to run the new OS. That's an extraction and installation of a completely new box. Is a retrofitted IHU even going to be avaialble?

 

How do you know? If required, I doubt Volvo would do this for free.

 

I don't know why people keep parroting that MY21-25 cars won't get or won't be able to run the new UI. Volvo's announcement said cars as early as 2020 will get it.

 

Simple: Volvo's press release material is not 100% accurate.

A "new GUI" is different from "a new OS" which is where our confusion may be located. Advanced CPU capabilities nd hardwre functions will require a new CPU and hardware interfaces. Improved--but limited--software functions, ne apps, new pictures, and new animations only require new software, as long as there is room on the drive and in RAM and the ancient CPU is up to the tasks.

 

A mechanic at a Volvo dealer told me today that he had changed a defect Infotainment Head Unit in a C40 MY2023. He could not see if the new unit was a 4.2 version (original in the car was 4.0) but when restarting car systems after reloading software 3.7.0 the new GUI appeared.

This could point to the following: When system starts and recognizes IHU version 4.2 the Infotainment system displays the new GUI. I guess the next OTA will insert a code that accepts to display new GUI on both IHU 4.0 and 4.2.

He also mentioned that the new GUI is planned to be rolled out in the coming OTA which seems to appear in November. This change of IHU means that it is possible to update older XC40 and C40 models from MY2021 to MY2025. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think these two Reddit threads contradict my first guess on potentially upgrade from IHU 4.0 til 4.2 in Volvo XC40/EX40:

These posts are a bit older. Fresh infotainment replacements are reporting huge performance bumps.

It starts to look like the IHU42 (Snapdragon ++) may be compatible as replacementunit for the older IHU40 (Atom). Which has been assumed earlier, but not yet publicly confirmed.
There has also been comments that Volvo planned to offer such an upgrade as a standard aftermarked update with a pricetag. We may end up with the technical possibility to replace older IHU with the newer unit, but not as aftermarket purchase. Will be interesting to see what such a workshop job will cost vs. the gains of the update.

Good news. Any idea on the IHU specs on XC40 MY2024 and EX40 MY2025 (upgraded RAM with the Atom processor)?

 

This is all very interesting... now I'm wondering what the criteria would be for an IHU replacement under warranty. Would Camera Temporarily Unavailable and internet connectivity problems be enough?

 

Seems like I have another 10k miles to get my IHU to fail

 

Anything that can be done to make the old IHU fail faster?

 

A replacement IHU would be freakin' great. I've got nothing else on which to spend my pension expcept health care and travel.
