OK, I give up. Dealer didn’t know, no mention in manual.
What is the intended use for that weird little covered compartment just aft of the phone charger area?
It has a silver handle. When open, there is a weird texture on the cover.
It sort of implied it would hold coins but the texture grooves aren’t deep enough to do that (I had a proper change holder in my Frontier).
I can’t get a phone to quite fit or stand upright in the hole.
It seems a little deep and tight to be a useful change holder.
So what are you using it for?

Our dealer told us it was to hold a phone upright, which my wife’s phone fits quite well in with her case. Mine wobbles around (I don’t use a phone case). It is also what the ashtray fits in to, if you buy one. See Ashtray - XC40 2021 - Volvo Cars Accessories

I don't use it at all. I've seen on some manuals that it's listed as an ashtray.

The sales person told me it was a business card holder, although I've never used it for that or even tried hahaha.

It's a cell phone holder.

Yes, I wasn't referring to the trash can module further back, but thanks for that. I think goatsweater nailed it with the pointer to the actual accessory item, but you all can use it how you please and sounds like there are lots of options.

I found that the "Trash Can Module" is removable and allows for a lot of extra room in the center console.

A hard tug worked for me. It is tight.

Unfortunately it could have been designed differently for other stuff or provide more functional options such as Phone stand etc

I mean statistically, what % of drivers smoke in the car to grant a design just to accommodate an ashtray ? Where else 100% of drivers has 1) phone 2)cash/coins etc

I suspect the % of smokers in EV drivers differs significantly from drivers of gas cars or cars in general, at least in the U.S. I use that compartment to hold my phone upright. It works great for that.

I have a larger phone -- Pixel 3XL -- which doesn't fit in this "ashtray", so mine is holding a screen cleaner wipe. Which actually needs to be folded nicely to keep the cover from popping open.,

Hard tug worked 👍🏻 I thought about leaving it out since my iPhone XR with Otterbox case doesn’t find. But I’m leaving it in place because I think my phone would slip off the Qi charger more than it does already.
