My XC40 2019/2020 is dead. No electrical power at all. It happened 2 months after the purchase in last December, and some months later again. These times it revived by itself after some hours. All the sudden the car gained electrical power and I could start the car But this time, no revive. Total black-out. The Car is now in a Volvo garage, for a week by now, but mechanics are unable to find the cause of problem. No diagnostic can be run because the car is all off, maybe. Can anyone tell what it could be?

Wow. This sucks. My XC40 has been acting kind of weird lately... it is such a tech heavy car - this is one of the downsides.

I would go on the offense no matter what the outcome. I would be in contact with my state's Attorney General ASAP. Auto manufacturers jump to life when A.G. get involved.

When power supply fails, a digital driven car can be extremely dangerous. I lost the control of the car at all.
My car stopped on the middle of street at night, dark all around. Car lump goes off, no harzerd lump brink, transmission gear at parking position. And of course, no Volvo SOS finction works. Windows do not open/close. The rear hatch door does not open so that I could not even take out a triangle emergency sign and fluorescent vest. Only thing I could do while waiting for a service truck was from a distance to hope no driver crash into the back of my car.

Weird noise from speakers synchronized with winker signal. Brinking front display panel. I remember some symptoms before that happend.

After two weeks, Volvo service returned my XC40. Volvo mechanic said he recharged battery and everything is all right. According to him, problem was due to dead battery but I am not convinced with his explanation. I wonder if the intermittent power fail problem has been solved. Why two weeks just to recharge a battery and some inspections?
Anyway, I will resume driving the car hoping some loose cabling tightened while the inspection.
If the car goes power failure once more, I will post on this thread again. If that happens, it will be the 4th time.

It happened again for 4th time today. Ironically the car didn't start just after the first regular maintenance at Volvo service. Volvo mecanics were completely stunned and could not give me any explanation when they returned the car dead.

Where do things stand presently? Is the vehicle back on the road?

Typically, if the vehicle goes back to the dealer several times for the same problem, the dealer should refer the matter back to Volvo's support people. Has this happened. It may help to contact Volvo sales (in the national office, not the dealer) and complain. Keep it simple. State the case ('20 XC40 Momentum - dead car, dealer can't find the case after four tries - something like that). Threats "you car sucks and I'm going to tell all my friends to buy your crappy car" only annoys them. They've heard it all before. I don't know what your local "Lemon law", if any, is. Maybe it's time to say "you've had it X times and can't fix it. Replace it". It's not out of the question to go this route here in the US.

Lead acid batteries can fail in this way. One moment they are fine, next moment dead as a door nail. A manufacturing flaw could make even a new battery exhibit this behavior.

Replace the battery. If the dealer will pay, great. Otherwise it's worth your own pocket cash to put this all behind you.

First, ask the service people if they tested the battery, and if so, how did they do it. If nothing else, pull battery and take it to a car parts dealer. Ask for a load test. Either the battery passes or doesn't. The results should be obvious. Tell the dealer about the results.

Given the space between loss of power, I doubt very much this not a simple "broken" battery. If the battery passes, and I think it will, there's a wiring issue. As I recommended earlier, I'd take your complaint further up in the Volvo hierarchy. Also, if you have a second dealer reasonably close, try them.
