With so many hybrid crossovers joining the segment, its not surprising that Volvo is trying to bring this to market quickly. If they can manage to beat BMW, MB and Audi by being first to market with a fully electric crossover, that could allow them to get controlling market share.

Its safe to say that just about any automaker releasing an SUV these days has electrification in mind. At the very least we'll be seeing hybrids from brands that want to take the slower approach, sort of like what Toyota is doing.

Do we think it will be styled identically to that of the ICE model? I'm not expecting them to fully redesign such a great looking car, but they should make some changes to distinguish it in the lineup.

On a personal level, all I would care for are some aero inspired bits like an aerodynamic grille, wheels, spoilers and so on that you see in examples from automakers today.
An aero style wheel like the Model 3 would look great here

I would personally consider an all-EV XC40 if it were reasonably feasible to take longer trips. I love to drive and, while most of my trips are a couple miles here or there around town, I couldn't stand the idea of being stuck in the city or having to spend an hour recharging every 2-3 of driving.

Personally it would discourage me from buying if the car had obvious EV distinguishing features on the exterior other than a badge on the sides or back or something. I think the days of the odd looking aerodynamics of the first edition BMW i3, for example, have come and gone, and now they just look gimmicky to me. Just personal opinion, so hopefully there will be a variety of design options.

Remove the exhaust ports and place some new badging and that's probably what we'll get with the EV. With the nearly 300 mile range that Polestar is claiming with the 2, there shouldn't really be any range anxiety issues with this version either, as I expect it will run on a similar powerplant.

I would not buy an electric model at the moment. So glad i bought my 2019 when i did. The tech is just not mature enough yet where you can drive 400 miles on one charge - just think how difficult it would be to find a gas station with electrical charge stations while doing a long road trip. If Volvo comes up with a 400 mile range vehicle i may consider it.

Totally agree. Until every diner and McDonalds have charging outlets in the parking area, an all electric vehicle is just asking to be stranded.

I agree with you guys in terms of range and mpg, but the whole idea is not about long distance travel at the moment. The idea is about a daily driver that's primarily used and stored in your garage. Nightly charging at your home.

The average current range is about 250 to 300 miles depending on the manufacturer. That's a respectable amount for a week on only ONE charge.

I'm just not sure whether to get the XC40 now or wait for the EV to come out. What do you think will happen to depreciation of the gas/diesel units once the EV comes out? will it accelerate?

I completely agree. I am, with fingers crossed, waiting to hear about the plug-in hybrid XC40. I was hoping to do ODP, and the idea of frantically driving all over Europe hoping to find a place I could charge my car is super stressful!
