Exterior trim popped off

Here's a problem I haven't seen mentioned anywhere: The little triangular piece of trim on the exterior of the back window popped off while opening the door.

I don't see any visible differences between the left side (where this occurred) and the right side of the car. Can't figure out why this would have happened. Has anyone encountered this?

I noticed mine popping on the rear drivers side last week, seems the door weather stripping is catching it. Not doing it on the rear passenger.

I have a service appointment Tuesday to look at it but right now I keep pressure on it if I have to open it.. pretty much only the dog uses the back seat.

Looks like few of the tabs that holds it broke? Did you bring this to the dealer and they have to fix something close to that section? Maybe they broke it. The technician lost some of our clips that holds the frunk cover.:mad:

I noticed my c40 had some clips missing in the frunk cover too but I haven't taken it to the dealer so I'm guessing it came like that from the factory.

It does look like some tabs broke. No idea how that could have happened -- the car is (obviously) pretty new, hasn't been driven much, no work has been done on it since bringing it home. Somehow, the weather stripping must have caught on it and popped it off, breaking the tabs.

I’ll try and post a video tomorrow on what is happening so if you dealer asks you can show them

I was going to mention this myself! That piece catches on our driver's side (UK right-hand-drive) when you open the door and I'm concerned it'll eventually wear down and come off. Clearly a design flaw and one to add to the snag list for Volvo I think!

Do you uses an automated car wash? If so, just wondering if that might be how this happened.

The car had not been through a car wash; there had been no impact to car, no explanation I can imagine. The back door has probably been opened and closed fewer than 20 times during our ownership of it. It seems to just be badly made?

Well, service repaired the issue but it returned by the time I got home and it feels like one of my clips broke in the process….

Thanks for the updates. I'm curious what they did to (supposedly) repair the issue? Was it a tweak to the liner or to the plastic trim?

Well, I have an extremely frustrating update.

I took the C40 into the service center to have the Volvo trailer hitch installed, and to have them look at the broken trim. They said they'd never seen this trim problem before, but didn't seem shocked by it -- basically indicated that similar things have been issues with other models of Volvo, and it wasn't a big deal. The part was backordered, so they said they'd temporarily attach the broken trim to the car.

A couple hours after dropping the car off they said they'd need to keep it an extra day because they forgot to order a part necessary for the hitch installation. Weird, but OK. Then when I picked the car up a couple days later I found glue smeared all over the side of the car. (See partial photo below.) When I brought this to their attention they spent a few minutes trying to wipe it off, then said that when I bring the car back for the new trim, they'll buff it out. In the meantime, it's quite ugly and has certainly damaged the ceramic coating and presumably the paint job as well. I have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to glue the trim on, rather than using something less permanent like double-sided tape. Even less idea why in the process of doing so they smeared glue all over the side of the car. And I don't care to guess whether they somehow didn't notice they had done so, or simply hoped that I wouldn't notice.

Also, ever since getting the car back, the tailgate no longer opens via foot movement, so it seems they either blocked or disabled the sensor.

Not a great first experience with the Volvo service center. The C40 has a lot of plastic on the exterior. Too much, it seems. My advice for anyone who needs a repair for this plastic is to insist as forcefully as possible that no glue be used.

Wow… unacceptable and I would let Volvo corporate know.

mine went in to replace that part and after a few hours they called and said it is not the trim but the piece below the trim and they ordered that and it should be a week or so.

I am cutting them some slack given the new model but will be having a conversation with the mgmt team if it is not fixed next time

That’s aweful! 😕. Poor quality workmanship. Hope they’ll get you fixed up after you take it back in.
Another update: After initially acknowledging their responsibility to fix the damage, the Volvo service center has become unresponsive. My Service Advisor told me via email a month ago he would check on the status of the replacement trim the next day and get back to me; he has not done so, and he has not responded to multiple follow-up emails. I'm afraid it may be time, as has been suggested, to bring Volvo corporate into this situation. Does anyone have advice about the best way to do so and / or appropriate contact information?
See the Volvo website for your country for contact information. Not sure what you think corporate is going to do for you but can't hurt. Why don't you try talking to the dealership manager or head of sales?
My dealer did finally repair the "popping" trim... Mine never came totally off. They replaced the entire door weather stripping, the trim piece and the clips. They had to take the interior door apart to do so. Took 4 visits, wrong parts ordered, etc. but seems to be good now. $1K warranty repair.

How long did it take, in all? I'm at about 6 weeks since taking the car in, and they still don't have the replacement trim in yet.
