I think it's more of a chemistry thing. Repeated charging of the battery to 100% could result in quicker degradation of its charge capacity/lifespan. Or so I've heard, I don't really know the engineering behind it. Should be fine to do it occasionally for long trips.

I charge mine to 90%, but I hardly ever do long trips in this car.
