My new XC40 had not been driven much as had delivery a few days before lockdown Then when I did drive it was daylight. Now I am finding that the screen goes black when driving through heavily wooded areas then come back when out in the light. Last night driving at dusk it goes so black can’t see anything. Surely it’s the wrong way round. I have searched my car and the handbook and no answers.

There's a small thumb wheel to the lower left of the steering column (next to the hatch release button) that adjusts the night brightness of the dash and center console. If you rotate it fully up the dash will not dim at all at night. I have mine set at about the halfway mark so I don't lose my night vision. It sound like yours may be all the way down. It's on pages 142-143 of the 2020 owner's manual.
