** This is a year after the rear pads and rotors were replaced 2 weeks after ownership last May. I think it's holding up, but as a good practice, best to check every so often. Had a super mild winter and I didn't encounter much heavy rain driving either. I DO make it a habit to drive the car for errands after each wash since being traumatized the first time!

I have been looking to see if there is a product that could offset the rusting process.
This is what I found.
BiltHamber Atom Mac
This is not a surface treatment rather as it describes it acts a migratory boding to ferrous materials including as it state car brakes.
I emailed there tech support to see what they said and got the following response.
Hi Christopher,

If it were applied regularly it may well ameliorate this.

Kind regards,

Pete Hamber

So whilst not definitive it certainly isn’t unsafe and may indeed help.

Unfortunately we don’t have our Volvo EV yet so I cannot test but I cannot help but be concerne. In the UK we have a 3 year warranty that will cover the pads and rotors, thereafter it will coming out of my pocket

Anyone has the actual copy of the TSB? I tried looking online for TSB #36169 but couldn’t find anything.
I’m making the appt to have the dealer address the accelerator recall and I’m going to ask them to address the breaks TSB.

It is simple new softer (less metallic) pads. Personally I stuck with my PowerStop pads as they are higher performing ceramic pads and have been flawless.

Also, sat in a C40 show car. I 100% prefer the xc40 body style. You cant see jack out of the back of the c40.
And if you have a dog …. The c40 is the devil :)

Strangely I have noticed my breaks making shhh noises more. Increase temp does equate to increased reaction speed.

I have added in a little more neutral braking which seems to take care of it.

How many miles on your car now? We are at 6.3k.

That is not unusual when wet, the key is the pads oxidizing to the rotors. Even my ceramic brakes will stick after a wash if left long enough, but no major clunking or grinding. If I let car sit 2 days after a wash I will hear them let go (not quite a clunk), but then all good. Even if I ever need pads on our cars I will stay with the Powerstop pads as they are ceramic and they grip great once you put about 100 miles on them.

sSomewhat related, curios what car brands do as the EU is about to regulate brake dust, may push more of them to ceramic vs. metallic.

That would be awesome if they regulated brake dust. Be nice if we did it here in the us. Was sad to find out about brake dust last year :(

I’m bringing my car for service next Friday so they can look at the signal loss (although it came back) and the rear rotors.
On the way I have the pads you recommended.
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll go back in this thread to see how to use them right at the begging.

That it is. Felt well enough to take a random drive out into the hills last night. Got to skip it into off road mode for some large pot holes. Love how it feels in the dry and the wet. Sad I missed the snow this year :(

OK, I had been procrastinating dealing with this issue on our car, but finally capitulated and made dealer service appointment (next week in order to get a loaner). I washed the car then drove home about 10 km and next day the pads were stuck and after it "let go" we got the thump-thump-thump. Drove the car about 25 km in light rain, and it sat outside for about 4 hours, and same thing...this time it seemed a lot worse (maybe had to do with the fact that we had to reverse out from where it was parked and maybe it removed a bigger chunk of pad?) I turned off OPD and pushed the brake pedal moderately and there was a lot of vibration coming through the pedal and the body. ****! Went away after about 3 km though. I told the dealer person I wanted to make sure they had new pads and rotors in stock and they assured me they would have, and I said for the EV model and they said, yes. LOL we'll see. Probably drop off the car and then they'll call me and say "we have to order special EV pads and rotors - it will take 3 weeks". If so that might send me off the deep end LOL. I might order some of @He Keith 's special Power Stop ceramic pads to pick up when we're in the USA later this year as a back-up solution if it happens after the dealer does their thing. I also asked them to check the headlight aim as we keep getting people giving us the brights even when the car is on low beam. Odd...and I have asked them to check for any connectivity/TCAM codes (not sure whether they will have a clue but we'll see!) The connectivity has been better since V2.1 I believe, but I think it's worth mentioning just so they know there are issues.

Driving alas does not dry out the pads.
Need to use the rolling opd off neutral braking you came up with!!!! To surpass neutral down hill braking which is better than body slam braking :)

Good luck with the dealership. Hopefully they changed the materials enough.

Yeah, I was just surprised that driving in some light rain caused them to stick again. The only previous time they had stuck was after washing, so I wonder if it gets progressively worse (maybe bits of pad get ripped off, then there's less surface area contact or maybe it's uneven, so it makes it easier for bits to get stuck or break off. We'll see. Looks like I could get the Power Stop pads @He Keith mentioned on Amazon for delivery to AUS for a reasonable price, so I will do that if dealer gives me no satisfaction...then I'll need to figure out how to hack the rear brakes so I can replace the pads myself...hmm...hope it doesn't come to that! :)

Dealer ship will/should do it for you.

And yes if the brakes are not getting used I imagine the surface gets more 3d so a greater surface area to go wrong with.

Mine did stick when I went out in torrential rain and deep puddles and did not do a 20 sec clean on the way home.

Sadly brakes are designed to brake. They are not designed to not brake. And hours are extensively used for not braking :)

The pads are always lightly engaged while braking even with regen. Whether it is enough to do anything to prevent the brakes from sticking is the question. Both our XC40 (2500mi and 7 month) and my C40 (3 months and 1300mi) got Powerstop at time of delivery and both have been great. The pad will stick on occasion if we wash and park, but they let go and no thumping or damage. Volvo offered to put the new pads on when they came out and I said I will stick with the Powerstop pads. In the US they were like $65USD which was minor investment for piece of mind.
