Well, they come on after a certain amount of deceleration. In the US, I've heard that it could be as little as 0.6 m/s^2.

Those numbers say that the car turns on the brake lights at about 0.1g deceleration.

This use to be an issue with manual transmission cars, you could slow drastically without braking.. People just have to pay attention.. I have found great value in dual facing dash cameras over the years..

I experimented with opd and brake lights on a dark night in Seattle and yes they do come on with only a teeny bit of retardation.

I say retardation not deceleration because I also tested it on a steep hill. Though the car was still accelerating due to gravity it was accelerating less due to regeneration. So though in absolute terms it was not decelerating there acceleration was lessened.

Ugh maybe writing with a cold is not a good idea hope it made sense. Sneezes.
