Purchased a 2020 XC40 Rdesign in Oct 2019. 26000Km on it.

When winter set in this year the tailgate started beeping and or opening and or closing randomly (or any combination of the three) when the car is parked and we have the key near the vehicle.

We live on the Canadian Prairies so have had some colder days. (- 25 degrees) and are in the country so car gets dirty fast.

Anyone heard of this problem? Is there a way to test the sensors? How exactly do the sensors for the auto tailgate work?

Have the dealership working on it. Reinstalled software (assume similar to reinstalling windows on a computer that is acting up) no change.

Going back in to the dealership in the morning to continue the hunt. Could be the sensor, could be the computer, or the connections between the sensor and computer. shouldn't be the key as it happens with all the keys.

Will post if I find out what is going on.

OK, so back from the dealership. They had to contact Volvo tech support. Fix was to remove the rear bumper and separate the FDM and Sensor wires. At the same time they cleaned everything out and checked for damaged / loose connections (of which the didn't admit to finding any).

Once FDM and Sensor wires were secured separately it has corrected the problem ... for now.

If it recurs I will try and post again. Although I am hopeful this is a permanent fix.

Further info.

The tailgate no longer opens and closes randomly, but getting it to open automatically is challenging. Have to try 4 - 5 times and sometimes doesn't want to open at all.

Dealership suggested that part of it might be the hitch that they installed when we bought the vehicle.

Hi! I just found your thread as I am having the exact same issue with my 16 month old XC90 T8. The dealer has only reset the software (which hasn't changed anything) and then implied its user error, eg me accidently using the kick movement under the bumper to raise the tailgate. This is not the case and the issue is getting worse - mainly the constant beeping and the tailgate operating by itself. We have even had the tailgate lower onto our heads while loading in shopping bags!

I was wondering how you went with your fix and if it is more or less resolved now? If so, I will send your thread to the dealership.

We had the dealership fit a hitch a few weeks after purchasing the car so I wonder if that is the cause here too.

Thanks!

I have a 2019 XC40. The tailgate randomly opens. Even when fully opened it sounds as though it is still trying to open (a clicking or thumping noise). When it randomly opens it doesn't always open fully. The random opening is truly random. It has opened when a key is next to car. It has opened in the parking lot when no key is nearby. It has opened when I have started the car and when I have turned the car off. It has not opened while driving. I took it to the dealership their conclusion was a short in the electronic control module. Not cheap. No choice but to fix it as I can't leave the car anywhere with the tailgate randomly opening.
