A/C Works Intermittently

3275 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Welland canada recharge
Took possession of my Recharge on April 30. Have heat pump option. Sometimes the A/C works; other times just blows warm air. Seems to be more likely not to work if car has been sitting in the sun.
Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas on a fix or workaround?

Yes, I too had the same problem. Took it to the dealer last week and after adding coolant and upgrading to the latest rev of software it now works fine. Plus, after this upgrade, you should be able to install On Call and the car should be able to handle OTA software updates from now on without yaving to go to the dealer everytime.

I think we are going to need a sticky that asks people to post their software version number. My understanding was that this was why my vehicle was delayed and was fixed by a software update as mentioned while I was looking for the update. ;)
My dealer told me on April 1st that my vehicle was being held at port for a heat pump software update. I assumed all was well with this issue when the vehicle arrived at the dealership.
Have a service appt for next week -- although my conversation with the service manager didn't leave me feeling confident he knew where to start to address the problem.
BTW, where can I find my current software version number?

Great question. Maybe Stephen knows?

I see an Android Security Patch Date. A Kernel Version date and a Build number in the Info section of Settings. Not sure if those have to do with the software version numbers or not.
I’m not sure

I've been curious about the car's software version as well. I suspect the "Android Security Patch | Kernel version | Build Number" details apply to the OS powering the Infotainment system. I've had mine for a little under a month and recently had the software update (Recall R10078) installed at the dealership. However when I checked the "Latest Updates" section in the car's Owner's Manual app, its latest entry was still the "Updates from and including April 2021".
I don't have heat pump, but got into car the other day and could not select AC on the screen -- it was greyed out, so to speak. Was late and took wife's car that night. Got in next morning and it was fine and has been. Dealer on phone said there is an issue with software using AC to cool batteries that makes cabin AC unavailable -- hoping that is in the case.

Maybe that is it? In the owners manual app it does have the App version info. Mine says -
Model: V316BEV
Version: 8.4.0 (20w38)
But again maybe that is just for the owners manual app version itself and not the car software.
Mine also has as the latest entry … “Updates from and including April 2021”.
Just a followup. Took my Recharge to local dealer today. Dealer said there is a Service Bulletin describing this intermittent AC issue. Requires replacing some parts in the AC system and then recharging it. Bad news, according to the dealer, is that the XC40 requires "special equipment" to perform the AC recharge that my dealer won't have until the end of July!
Are there any other dealers around with the gear?

Have the same Issue with the A/C - according to Volvo Tech Support it is the Expansion Valve - needs to be replaced - part not available right now in Canada - coming in from the US - hopefully arrives Friday - installed and then tested and hopefully resolved issue - will wait and see. Dealer did not mention they would have an issue to recharge the A/C system - fingers crossed.
Having same issues with A/C. Did not work at all driving 120 miles in 95 degree heat, yesterday.
Borton dealership says they are waiting for a special part. In the meantime, today I was at a public charging station and charged it for about 15 minutes. The A/C was working perfectly. I think it is a software issue.

Checking out other possible dealers in the area. Mine said that he would provide a long term loaner if I wanted.
So far I would not say it is intermittent, but I don't find it cooling consistently in auto, I think it is more it does not crank the fan speed up high enough on mine. I will monitor this closely. I will have to check the air coming out of th events more often, but when I had it felt cool, but barely moving any air.
I am unfortunately having this same issue. I am on the latest (June '21) software version and my A/C randomly does or doesn't work depending on how it feels at the time! Booked into the dealer in 2.5 weeks time, hope it's an easy fix!

The Expansion valve replacement in our case did not fix the issue - went back a week later and the dealer had a Volvo Tech rep have a look and it was decided to replace the heat exchanger and a fuse box relay - A/C has been working well now for the last 2 weeks - so I think the issue is now resolved, will continue to monitor.
