I'm about to order a new 2021 XC40 Momentum via Overseas delivery with the hope of taking the trip to Sweden next summer. Plan on keeping the XC40 10+ years so I'm ordering it with the intent of carrying two bikes on a tray style platform and not hanging from hitch by the frame. I LOVE the European Volvo tray style bike rack that attaches to the 50mm hitch that allows one to lean the bikes away from the trunk and open it while the bikes are loaded into the carrier. However, 50mm does not equal 2 inches which seems to be the US standard for hitches. My two part question:
1) is it at all possible to have Volvo install their 50mm hitch at the factory and purchase the 2 bike tray style carrier as an accessory for my new XC40? I've read conflicting info as to whether the factory in Sweden will install hitches there or only when it arrives at a port in the US which would seem highly unlikely to have a European standard 50mm hitch installed.
2) I have yet to find a comparable US option. Are there any tray style bike carriers you would recommend from Thule or another aftermarket company that works with the 2 inch American standard hitch that is rugged and has potential to still access the trunk with bikes in the rack?
Any info is appreciated...
