I live in MN. When it gets cold-under 20° F under brisk acceleration a rattling noise comes from the front left-possibly the front motor? Only happen in the cold. I have a service appointment for next week. Any thoughts from the community?

I had the same, at first only in cold temps and then always under brisk acceleration. Both driveshafts replaced under warranty, no noise after that.

Thank you for replying so promptly Swedish C40! The response makes sense for my situation. Are there two drive shafts in the front? Also, is this an inherent problem that we can expect to deal with in another 30,000 miles?

Also have this issue and recently went to the dealership to have it diagnosed. I’m in the US fyi.

Was told by the dealer that the front axles need to be replaced but are on back order in the US for now. Covered under warranty and the current axles are not a danger to drive on.

@SwedishC40

Do you happen to have the part number(s) for the new driveshafts?

Like BabaMkubwa, I am also in the US. I think over here we are getting the run around from these dealers. I first brought up my acceleration noise and vibration over a year ago now. All I hear every time I follow up is 'Volvo is still working on it and hasn't given us any direction'.

Clearly some people have gotten these issues fixed - IIRC even some in the US. Either Volvo isn't giving consistent messaging to their dealer network over here or the individual dealers are just doing whatever they feel like doing - or don't feel like doing.

Posting for awareness.

Got my C40 back today after they swapped the axles. It was around 45 Fahrenheit when I picked up and I promptly floored it and did not hear or feel the usual rattle.

Looking at the invoice, the technical journal is #36496. Parts required were two spacers (#32436419-9) and axles (#36003544-8 and #36010612-4). The axles came direct from Sweden and supposedly took 15 business days to arrive and once shipped.

Parts and labor were covered under factory warranty.

Hope that helps!
